Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Under general supervision, teach developmental and transfer-level English Composition and Literature courses and perform other teaching-related duties that include but are not limited to planning, organizing, and independently carrying out instructional and non-instructional assignments;
  2. Preparing course syllabi and reports related to teaching and student progress;
  3. Maintaining office hours for academic advising and conferring with students about course work (one office hour per week, per three-credit class);
  4. Developing teaching strategies, instructional materials and methods which use computers in instruction where appropriate and integrating writing, technology, and critical thinking skills in course content;
  5. Designing, delivering, and assessing instruction in terms of course competencies and student learning outcomes;
  6. Developing and/or updating curriculum, teaching methods and assessment strategies to improve student learning based on assessment results;
  7. Participating and complying with collaborative departmental decisions regarding instructional matters such as texts, assignments, and grading standards; and
  8. Participating in department and/or institutional assessments of student learning.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Master's in English; OR
  2. Master's in English Composition Rhetoric or English Literature; OR
  3. Master's in Fine Arts (Creative Writing).

Desirable Qualifications

  1. Positive outcomes in teaching writing and literature substantiated by student and peer assessments.
  2. Design and deliver instruction that adheres to the hallmarks of writing intensive classes when needed.
  3. Graduate course work in the theory and practice of teaching composition and in literary studies as substantiated by transcripts.
  4. Experience teaching English classes online.
  5. Evidence of commitment to the mission and values of the Community College's open-door policy for diverse learners.
  6. Evidence of commitment to Kapi‘olani Community College's mission of positioning the college as a leading Native Hawai‘ian/indigenous-serving higher education institution.
  7. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with peers, department chairs, and administrators.
  8. Demonstrated ability to initiate, execute, and complete projects, including setting specific objectives and measuring results.
  9. Demonstrated ability to write clear prose as substantiated by publications or writing samples.
