The University of Hawaiʻi, Kapiʻolani Community College, Languages, Linguistics, & Literature Department is seeking applications for the Hawaiian lecturer position.

Salary

Minimum $1,911 per credit hour; subject to lecturer placement.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach courses in the assigned subject area through multiple modes of teaching (e.g., in-person, online, hybrid);
  • Prepare course syllabus and reports related to teaching and student progress;
  • Assess student learning in terms of course competencies and program learning outcomes;
  • Submit self-assessment reports based on student and peer evaluations;
  • Work under the general supervision of the discipline coordinator/division chairperson;
  • Integrate teaching efforts with other instructors in the discipline area;
  • Maintain one office hour per week for each class taught (20 minutes per credit per week);
  • Classes may be offered in-person, online, evenings, and/or weekends;
  • Classes may be offered off-site as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Functionally native oral and written fluency in Hawaiian, the ability to communicate in English, and one of the following:

  • Master's degree in Hawaiian language; OR
  • Master's degree in Hawaiian as a Second Language; OR
  • Master's degree in the study of the culture or history of the people who speak Hawaiian; OR
  • Master's degree in Linguistics, ESL, Education or another language, with at least 12 credits of advanced coursework in second language methodology, Hawaiian literature, Hawaiian culture, or any combination thereof; OR
  • Bachelor's degree in Hawaiian language AND 3 years related work experience; OR
  • Bachelor's degree in Hawaiian language as a Second Language AND 3 years related work experience; OR
  • Bachelor's degree in the study of the culture or history of the people who speak Hawaiian AND 3 years related work experience; OR
  • Bachelor's degree in Linguistics, ESL, Education or other language, with at least 12 credits of advanced coursework in second language methodology, Hawaiian literature, Hawaiian culture, or any combination thereof AND 3 years of related work experience.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Evidence of experience integrating speaking, writing, technology and thinking skills in the teaching of the Hawaiian language;
  • Experience teaching Hawaiian language in-person and online;
  • Successful teaching at the post-secondary level as substantiated by student and peer assessments;
  • Evidence of ability to work in a collegial manner with peers, department chairs, and administrators;
  • Successful use of technology to support all modes of instruction;
  • Commitment to the mission and values of the community college with its open-door and multicultural populations;
  • Evidence of commitment to Kapiʻolani Community College's mission of positioning the college as a leading Native Hawaiian/indigenous-serving higher education institution;
  • Ability to initiate, execute, and complete projects, including setting specific objectives and measuring results;
  • Demonstrated evidence of the ability to develop Hawaiian literature and/or culture courses;
  • Comprehension or understanding of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) scale.
