Job Summary
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Elmhurst University is searching for a Lecturer in the fields of Organic Chemistry or Biochemistry to start in August 2026. Teaching responsibilities will generally include a year-sequence of general organic and biochemistry (GOB) for pre-nursing students, as well as organic chemistry lecture and lab for science majors. Assistance in majors level biochemistry courses and lab may arise. Future development of special topics classes in the candidate area of expertise is possible. While this is a teaching position, the lecturer may participate in research that engages undergraduate students.
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Elmhurst University serves 40-50 majors and a similar number of minors, participates in the integrated curriculum, and supports students majoring in biology, nursing, exercise science, physics and environmental studies. Our department holds an endorsement from the American Chemical Society and offers majors in Chemistry and Biochemistry. A successful candidate will be able to engage with students both inside and outside the classroom through evidence-based pedagogy and proactive mentoring. Course and laboratory design should include contemporary topics and techniques that follow best practices, include active learning methods and prepare students for jobs in modern labs or hospital settings.
Essential Functions
- Responsibilities for this position include course and laboratory design, preparation, teaching, grading and support of undergraduates enrolled in instructed courses; advising undergraduate students through their program of study in preparation for their career goals; assisting in departmental and university matters through service on committees and participating in activities such as department fairs.
Minimum Qualifications
- Applicants must have an MS in organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry or biochemistry (a Ph.D. is preferred) and demonstrate excellence in undergraduate teaching and mentoring, and outstanding potential as a professor in a comprehensive liberal arts setting.
Preferred Qualifications
- Applicants with experience teaching and mentoring undergraduate students and/or have expertise in pharmaceutical/pharmacology, medicinal chemistry are strongly encouraged to apply.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
The essential functions of this position are primarily performed in an indoor setting with limited exposure to outdoor weather conditions. Work is often sedentary in nature and requires remaining in a stationary position for extended periods. Required abilities include speaking and hearing for in-person and virtual communication, using close and distance vision when reading documents or viewing screens, and performing tasks with repetitive fine motor skills. Work may require occasional lifting, bending, carrying, or otherwise moving objects weighing up to 15 pounds.
