• M.A. in Art History, Visual Culture, or related area.

Areas of Interest (No Minimum Level Required)

  • Earned Ph.D in Art History, Visual Culture, or related area by time of hire.
  • Demonstrated specialization in any period of global art history/visual culture.
  • College-level teaching experience at the TA level or beyond.
  • Ability to teach art history surveys from a global perspective.
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness.
  • Knowledge of current trends in the fields of art history/visual culture/visual studies.
  • Experience with, or commitment to, educating and mentoring students of varied backgrounds and demographics (appstate.edu/resources).

Description of the Department or Unit
The Art and Visual Culture degree program is the only one of its kind in the UNC system. It seeks to engage students in a wide range of visual representation, some which falls outside the bounds of traditional art history. The Department of Art is NASAD-accredited and has over 40 full-time faculty members, nearly 750 undergraduate majors, and offers BFA degrees in Art Education, Graphic Design, and Studio Art; a BA degree in Art and Visual Culture with concentrations in Art History, Art Management, and Studio Art; a BFA in Photography with concentrations in Fine Art and Commercial; and BS degrees in Graphic Communications Management with concentrations in Print/Packaging Production and Cross Media Production.

The Department of Art offers a wide range of travel opportunities, including trips to the university's New York Loft and study abroad trips to China, Cuba, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Scotland, and Spain.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach six courses per year, including art history surveys and, with a Ph.D., upper-level courses in area(s) of specialization.
  • Teaching will occur in person at the Boone campus.
  • Potential for participation in department, college, or university service.
