Lecturer in Bioscience Education
About The Role
The Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine is seeking to appoint a lecturer with an excellent track record in bioscience education to deliver teaching in the areas of biomedical science with a particular emphasis on pharmacology, molecular genetics and/or bioinformatics. The post-holder will live and work in Shenzhen, China and will teach primarily on the newly established BSc Biomedical Science programme set up as part of the SUSTech - KCL Joint Education Institute (JEI).
The lecturer will be an enthusiastic educator with an ability to inspire the next generation of bioscientists, and will be expected to lead and contribute to the delivery of modules, provide academic support to students and work closely with colleagues across the JEI and the Faculty.
Successful candidates will be appointed to our Academic Education Pathway (AEP) that allows career progression to Professor based upon contribution to education and scholarship. Staff on the AEP have an indicative 20% of time available to engage in pedagogical research.
We are particularly interested in candidates able to teach undergraduates in research aspects of biomedical science, pharmacology, medical genetics and /or bioinformatics, alongside making contributions to transferable/academic skills training. Candidates with experience of teaching and/or supporting international students’ learning in these specialities are encouraged to apply.
The post holders will be accountable for quality assurance of their teaching and peer review of others to sustain and develop high quality education. Academic citizenship through activities that underpin excellence in education is expected, including sharing best practice and learning from others.
The post holders will:
- devote 80% of their time to education excellence.
- develop and deliver education on our BSc Biomedical Science Joint Education Programme.
- provide student support and undertake education-related administrative duties as directed by the Programme Lead(s) of the relevant joint programme.
- have the potential to develop an independent research profile in pedagogical research.
Where possible, successful candidates will spend some time at King’s College London developing educational materials and methods before starting teaching duties on the SUSTech campus for a period of four years.
Post holders will receive competitive remuneration packages and benefits, including a ‘market supplement’ to their salary when based in China, subsidised accommodation in China and annual flights to and from the UK.
This is a full time post (35 hours per week), and you will be initially offered a fixed term contract four year secondment to China.
About You
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
Essential criteria
- PhD in Bioscience subject
- Experience of delivering quality teaching and learning, at undergraduate level
- Highly effective oral and written communication skills, to convey conceptual and complex ideas and information
- Good organisational and administrative skills
- Proactive in creating and developing interactions and collaborations with colleagues with an ability to function within a team and to plan and prioritise workload
- Experience of supporting student progression and welfare as a personal (pastoral) tutor in higher education
- Desire to live and work in China
Desirable criteria
- Experience in curriculum design and development
- Fellowship of HEA or other teaching qualification
- Some knowledge of spoken / written mandarin
Grade and Salary: £53,947 - £63,350 per annum inclusive of London Weighting Allowance
