About the role

We are seeking an enthusiastic individual with the appropriate disciplinary experience for the post of Lecturer in Computer Engineering, who are interested in developing an independent world-leading research group in one of the following areas: (i) future computing paradigms (e.g. neuromorphic, quantum, unconventional); (ii) sustainable & energy-efficient computing; and (iii) secure and trustworthy hardware-software platforms for AI. In addition to leading their research group, the post-holder will also play a key role in the continuing development and delivery of modules in computer engineering for undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes offered by the Department of Engineering.

Our Department of Engineering is home to academics whose backgrounds span the entire range of engineering disciplines. As part of this diverse group, there is a very successful group of engineers that span ultra-low-power CMOS integrated circuits and systems and in memory computation, as well as excellent groups in signal processing, telecommunications and semiconductor materials research.

This position is being established to continue to grow the area of computer engineering within the Department and the research of the post holder’s group should be complementary to that which is currently established within the department.

Responsibilities include:

  • Establishing a world-leading research group in a relevant research area ((i) future computing paradigms (e.g. neuromorphic, quantum, unconventional); (ii) sustainable & energy-efficient computing; and (iii) secure and trustworthy hardware-software platforms for AI)
  • Developing and delivering high-calibre modules within the area of computer engineering for both undergraduate and postgraduate Engineering students
  • Actively pursuing external research funding from both governmental funding bodies and industrial partners
  • Leading undergraduate and postgraduate student projects within the Department of Engineering
  • Supervising PhD students and post-doctoral researchers who are part of your research group
  • Contributing to the administrative duties within the department and/or faculty.
  • Contributing in a positive manner to the culture within the Department of Engineering
  • Demonstrating a proven commitment to equality and diversity.

This is a full-time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  1. PhD in relevant field of Engineering or related discipline
  2. Outstanding research record appropriate to career stage in the areas of (i) future computing paradigms (e.g. neuromorphic, quantum, unconventional); (ii) sustainable & energy-efficient computing; and (iii) secure and trustworthy hardware-software platforms for AI
  3. Evidence of significant impact in the field
  4. Ability to develop and teach undergraduate and postgraduate modules in engineering and supervise student individual and group projects
  5. Ability to manage and interact with staff and students at all levels and make significant contributions to administrative work
  6. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills
  7. Ability and willingness to work effectively on personal initiative as well as in a team and to meet deadlines

Desirable criteria

  1. Demonstrated experience of supervising postgraduate students and experience in directing an individual/team research project or programme of work at an international standard
  2. Contribute positively to the culture within the department
  3. Demonstrate a commitment to equality and diversity
