Sociology, Gender Studies and Criminology is a vibrant multidisciplinary programme, forming the largest academic unit in the School of Social Sciences at the University of Otago. To build on our success, we are seeking to appoint a Lecturer to join our team in February 2026. The role/Te mahi

We welcome applications from candidates with a demonstrated focus on criminology and criminal justice. The successful candidate will teach into our Criminology curriculum and contribute to the wider programme. Upon commencement of the position, they will be expected to contribute to several of the following areas of our curriculum, including: indigenous or postcolonial criminology, theories and systems of punishment, community-engaged criminology and criminal justice. In this role, they will: be encouraged to develop and maintain a programme of research and publication, contribute to the strong postgraduate research culture in our programme, be expected to supervise postgraduate student dissertations and theses, be expected to undertake service work with the programme, School, University and wider communities.

The successful candidate: may hold a doctoral degree (or close to completion) in Criminology or a cognate discipline (candidates who hold a research Masters degree and who are committed to pursuing a PhD are encouraged to apply), will have peer-reviewed research publications and evidence of high-quality teaching, demonstrates experience with postgraduate supervision and/or mentorship, demonstrates the ability to draw from Māori, Pacific, and/or Indigenous experiences and epistemologies in research, practice and/or teaching, demonstrates the ability to collaborate with local, national, regional and/or international Indigenous scholars, demonstrates the ability to work with students and staff from differing academic and cultural backgrounds and at all levels of the institution, has the ability to contribute to the development and growth of the Criminology major, is willing to support the other disciplines in the programme, Sociology and Gender Studies, through occasional teaching and supervision, shows commitment to upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi and to fostering collaborative teaching and research relationships with Māori and/or Pasifika communities, according to principles of Kaupapa Māori, Teu le vā, or similar relevant frameworks. Expertise in any of the following areas is desired: Indigenous knowledges and research methodologies, Indigenous philosophies and theories, The national and/or global challenges of crime and justice affecting Indigenous communities.

This is a full-time (1 FTE) permanent position, based in Ōtepoti, Dunedin. The appointment range for this role is $97,377 to $114,943 per annum.
