The Sociology, Gender Studies, and Criminology programme is a vibrant, multidisciplinary unit and the largest academic group in the School of Social Sciences, Division of Humanities. Our Criminology programme has a critical criminology focus that we are looking to expand. To support this growth, we are seeking to appoint a Lecturer to join our team in mid‑2026. This is a full‑time, permanent position.

The role | Te mahi

We welcome applications from candidates with a demonstrated focus in criminology and/or criminal justice. The successful candidate will teach within the Criminology curriculum and contribute to the wider programme. On commencement, they will contribute to introductory and core criminological theory papers, and over time will be encouraged to develop new undergraduate and postgraduate courses aligned with their expertise.

The successful candidate will develop and maintain an active programme of research and publication. They will supervise postgraduate dissertations and theses and contribute service to the Programme, School, University, and wider communities.

Your skills and experience | Kā pūkeka me kā wheako

Candidates are expected to demonstrate a strong disciplinary grounding in Criminology, with the capacity for high‑quality teaching, research, and service, including:

• A doctoral degree in Criminology or related discipline
• Demonstrated strong record of research publications in criminology
• Demonstrated experience and ability in delivering high‑quality teaching
• Ability to contribute to the development and growth of the Criminology major
• Demonstrated experience with postgraduate supervision and/or mentorship
• Willingness to support Sociology and Gender Studies through occasional teaching and supervision
• Demonstrated ability to work with students and staff from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds
• Commitment to supporting Māori and Pacific student success, aligned with the University’s Māori Strategic Framework and Pacific Strategic Framework

This is a full‑time (1 FTE) permanent position based in Ōtepoti, Dunedin.
