Our School of Applied Sciences is recognised for the quality of the educational provision we offer, the employability of our graduates and the international reputation and partnerships we have. It currently hosts The Scottish Institute for Policing Research, a partnership between 14 Scottish Universities, Police Scotland and the Scottish Police Authority.

Our Criminology course draws on social sciences, law, computing and business modules, and aims to give our students an understanding of a discipline that is evolving theoretically and methodologically, and we currently have an opportunity for a Lecturer in Criminology to join us and support the subject group with teaching requirements for a period of 9 months.

The Role:

As Lecturer in Criminology, you will have the opportunity to join our vibrant Social Sciences subject group and take responsibility for delivering teaching and student-centred learning, underpinned by academic scholarship and professional practice within your assigned areas of responsibility.

You will be in an excellent position to bring your disciplinary expertise to our thriving teaching and research culture, in turn contributing to our current undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. This will likely include: leading two undergraduate criminology modules and contributing to the teaching on some additional modules on our BA in Criminology and BSc in Policing and Criminology, as well as providing supervision to Honours projects and MSc student theses.

As a multidisciplinary school with an excellent record in applied research and teaching, we will support you to go beyond traditional boundaries, working with others internally, across the wider university, and externally to foster an inter-professional, collaborative approach to educational delivery from the outset.

Further to this, you will find yourself making a profound and positive impact on the experience of our students as you use your initiative, creativity and judgement in applying appropriate approaches to teaching and learning support and scholarly activities.

What we will need from you:

  • A doctoral level qualification in a relevant discipline, or close to achieving it (submission stage or ViVa)
  • Demonstrable evidence of research and/or teaching specialisation in key areas such as: health and justice, penology, quantitative methods.
  • Evidence of a professional academic research profile that is commensurate with the stage of your career alongside a commitment to sustained continuous professional/academic development.
  • Sufficient breadth and depth of experience in criminology and related subject areas to develop high quality teaching/learning and research programmes and have experience of research led teaching and/or training.
  • Demonstrable evidence of teaching and learning enhancement initiatives to support the University Strategy of enhancing student experience and increasing graduate employability.

Benefits we offer:

Minimum of 46 days annual leave, contributory pension of 26%, flexible working and professional development opportunities. Further information regarding our excellent benefits can be viewed here.

Additional information:

Salary: Grade 6 - £46,049 - £58,225 (dependent on experience and calculated pro rata)

Contract: Fixed-Term – 9 months

Hours: Full Time – 35 hours per week

The University holds Disability Confident, Carer Positive and Stonewall Scotland Diversity Champion status. More details can be found here.
