Lecturer in Global History of Science

About us

UCL Department of Science and Technology Studies (STS) seeks to appoint one Lecturer in Global History of Science to contribute to taught undergraduate and masters modules, to undertake related academic support duties, and engage in related research. This is a full-time appointment, available from 01 September 2026.

We interpret science, technology and society broadly. We are looking for candidates who place an emphasis on the global dimension of science, as a set of practices and as a social, political and cultural phenomenon, in their research. Any period from early modern to late modern science is relevant. Candidates with a focus on non-western contexts and knowledge of non-western language(s) will be preferred.

About the role

The main duties of the post will involve:

• Teach undergraduate and postgraduate modules in the subject area.
• Complete marking for these modules in a timely fashion.
• Undertake administrative duties associated with the modules and with STS degrees.
• Supervise students' research projects at all levels.
• Conduct and communicate research in area of specialism.
• Actively seek external research funding.
• Contribute to the academic life of the department.

• A published piece of scholarship (research article or book chapter)
• A personal statement no longer than 2 sides of A4 indicating: how you propose to develop your own research programme over the next 4-6 years; and how you propose to contribute to our undergraduate (both BSc and integrated BSc) and postgraduate teaching programmes.
• A document in which you design the syllabus of a new STS module.

Interviews are scheduled to take place in late June, likely on 25th June 2026. In-person interviews will be preferred and the department will contribute up to £600 towards travel and accommodation arrangements.
