Birkbeck, University of London, is pleased to announce an opening for a Lecturer in Law. Birkbeck Law School forms part of Birkbeck’s Business and Law Faculty and is an internationally respected centre for world class legal teaching and research.

We are looking for an exceptional Lecturer (Teaching & Education) to join Birkbeck Law School, with specific duties as an Enhanced Pastoral Tutor (EPT.) EPTs work closely with their teaching groups in contract law and strategically with colleagues to support student experience, engagement, and continuation.

Further to the Job Description (available on the university's website, accessed by the 'Apply' button), as a Lecturer in Law, your responsibilities will include:

  • Teaching Contract Law and contributing to programme curriculum as appropriate and according to relevant expertise.
  • Using listening, interpersonal and pastoral care skills to deal with sensitive issues concerning students, being responsible for the pastoral care and support of students within a specified area; acting as a mentor for students in the capacity of personal tutor, giving first line support; and referring students to alternative sources and services for providing further help as appropriate.
  • Employing innovations in teaching and learning, to meet the learning needs of students, through the development of teaching materials, forms of pedagogy, or appropriate teaching collaborations.
  • Undertaking and developing administrative and management roles and responsibilities within the School, (e.g. Exams Officer, Admissions Tutor) as agreed with the Head of School.
  • Maintaining up to date expertise in relevant subject areas.

Further to the person specification, essential requirements for this role include:

  • Teaching experience in law at degree and/or postgraduate level.
  • An understanding of different teaching and learning methods and experience of working with students from a range of backgrounds.
  • An ability to lecture and conduct seminars clearly and effectively, with the assistance of a mentor if required.
  • Organisation and administration skills.
  • Interpersonal skills to relate well to students especially mature students.

Remuneration Actual £22,124 rising to £30,429, (Pro rated £44,247 rising to £60,858) per annum. The salary is Grade LLEC on the College's London Pay Scale which includes a consolidated Weighting/Allowance which applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the London area.

Terms and Conditions Fixed-term contract to August 2026, part-time (17.5 hours per week on average, with greater intensity during teaching and marking periods.
