Lecturer in Liberal Arts (R&T)

We are seeking to appoint an open-ended Lectureship in Liberal Arts. The appointment will support the launch of the University’s exciting new degree programmes in Liberal Arts which will welcome its first students in September 2026. On appointment the Lecturer will take on the role of Programme Director for Liberal Arts, a leadership and management position that will normally be held for 3-4 years. On completion of the Liberal Arts Programme Director role, the Lecturer will continue in the open-ended Lectureship in Liberal Arts.

The new degree programme is based in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures (SMLC); however, as outlined below, it is interdisciplinary in approach. We thus welcome candidates with strong Liberal Arts experience and expertise whose core research and teaching interests align with those of SMLC and / or with those of any of our other three Schools: Critical Studies; Culture & Creative Arts, and Humanities. We are particularly interested in candidates who bring expertise in one or more of the following areas: Modern Languages, Comparative Literature, English Literature, Film & Television Studies, History, Philosophy or Theatre Studies.

Liberal Arts at Glasgow offers a new approach to the academic skills developed in the Arts and Humanities through a broad, flexible, and interdisciplinary degree structure. A unique additional feature of the programme at Glasgow is the opportunity for specialisation according to different subject pathways, allowing students to study Liberal Arts with (one of) Comparative Literature, English Literature, Film & Television Studies, History, Philosophy or Theatre Studies. Further details of this new programme are available here.

The University holds a leading place worldwide in the research and teaching of the Arts and Humanities. As above, the research specialisation of applicants should reflect one of the disciplines in the College of Arts and Humanities, including but not limited to those represented in SMLC. The postholder will be a member of SMLC, although the nature of the programme is such that their work will involve coordination with other Schools and subjects across the College. It is expected that the postholder will assume the lead academic role for the programme as well as leading teaching on the core courses. The programme’s first intake will be in September 2026 and the postholder will support students to construct a curriculum that aligns with their individual interests.

Informal enquiries should be directed to Professor Nina Parish, Head of School (nina.parish@glasgow.ac.uk).

This post is full-time (35 hours per week) and is offered on an open-ended basis.
