The role
The University of Bristol’s School of Arts seeks to appoint fixed-term 0.6 FTE Lecturer in Music Composition at grade J, level B, 1 September 2026 until 31 July 2027. You will have experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate studio and acoustic composition, and related technical topics, assessing student work in a variety of formats. You will deliver lectures and seminars at undergraduate and MA level, mark written work and compositions (both acoustic and studio), supervise and mark undergraduate studio-related portfolios, undertake any necessary teaching-related administration, and provide tutorial support to students.
What will you be doing?
The precise duties will be agreed in discussion with the Head of Subject and Director of Teaching. They are likely to include:
- Direct and deliver first-year BA unit Composition (both acoustic and studio elements)
- Contribute to first-year BA unit Technical Studies (covering pastiche composition, harmony and counterpoint, and/or analysis of common-practice music)
- Direct and deliver second year BA unit Writing for Orchestra and MA unit Advanced Orchestration
- Contribute to seminar and tutorial teaching for final-year BA Studio projects (may include composition and/or recording)
- Contribute to MA team-taught units Composers and Performers; Source Study; Research Skills; Readings and Repertoires 1 and Readings and Repertoires 2.
- Mark final portfolios for the MA in Composition for Film and TV
- Contribute to curation of performances by BULO (Bristol University Loudspeaker Orchestra)
Additionally, experience in running social-media accounts and willingness to contribute to the department’s social media presence would be desirable.
You should apply if
- You have a completed PhD in Composition, and any corrections have also been completed.
- You have recent and current experience of, and expertise in expertise in composition, studio and orchestration teaching at BA level, including marking and assessment.
- You have excellent communication skills and the ability to work both independently and in a team.
- You have fluent or near-fluent English, and ability to advise students in detail of academic written expression in English
