Ngā kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

The University of Waikato is seeking a motivated and experienced educator to teach computing as part of the Bachelor of Design (Interface Design) delivered at the Joint Institute with Hangzhou City University (NZUWI) in China.

This full-time role is based in Hangzhou and involves developing and delivering lectures, leading tutorials, supervising student projects, and designing and marking assessments. You will be part of a small, collaborative academic team responsible for delivering the Bachelor of Design programme to undergraduate students studying in an English-language environment.

The role suits an educator who can apply both professional and academic experience to teaching computer science for design students. You will contribute to a programme that integrates computing, interface design, and user experience, supporting students to develop strong technical and creative capabilities in a global learning context.

The salary range is CNY 388,000 to CNY 460,000 per annum, depending on qualifications, skills and experience. For further information, please refer to the position description. Confidential enquiries may be directed to Annika Hinze, Head of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, at annika.hinze@waikato.ac.nz. Applications must be submitted via the online portal (by clicking on the 'Apply' button above); emailed applications will not be accepted.

Ko wai koe? - Who are you?

You will hold a master’s degree in computer science or a related field (a PhD is preferred) and have at least two years of full-time teaching experience, as required for work permit eligibility.

You will have the capability to teach core computer science topics for design students, including programming, software architecture, user experience design, full stack web development, and interface design for web and mobile platforms.

Experience teaching both large and small classes is essential. As all teaching is delivered in English, you will be confident working with students for whom English is an additional language. Experience teaching in China or the wider Asian region, along with knowledge of Chinese culture, is desirable.

Ko wai mātou? - Who are we?

A comprehensive benefits package is provided, including contributions toward off-campus accommodation, relocation costs, international school or pre-school tuition (where applicable), work visa and medical insurance costs, and one return economy airfare per year to your home country.

The appointment is expected to commence in September 2026 and is subject to meeting Chinese foreign expert employment regulations.
