Lecturer in Veterinary Science

About This Opportunity

We are looking for a Teaching-Focused Lecturer who is passionate about shaping the future of veterinary education. This is an opportunity to lead course coordination and deliver high-impact teaching in avian, wildlife, and exotic veterinary medicine, providing students with authentic, hands-on learning within our veterinary teaching environment. In this role, you will apply your disciplinary expertise to enhance the student learning experience, contribute to curriculum innovation, and collaborate across the School, the broader veterinary community, and external partners.

The position offers scope for professional growth, recognition for teaching excellence, and the opportunity to influence veterinary education aligned with UQ’s values, with research and supervision responsibilities tailored in consultation with the Head of School.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Teaching: Deliver high-quality teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate courses, with a focus on avian, exotic, and wildlife veterinary content. Coordinate courses, design engaging lectures, tutorials, and assessments, and contribute to new programs and course materials. Use evidence-based, innovative pedagogies including online and blended methods, maintain course quality through evaluations, and provide academic advice and support to students.
  • Research: Develop a profile in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning by integrating discipline expertise and pedagogical innovation. Collaborate within and beyond the University to improve teaching practices, publish in peer-reviewed outlets, and seek funding to support projects enhancing pedagogical quality. Begin building a national profile in teaching innovation.
  • Supervision and Researcher Development: Supervise students at Honours, Coursework Masters, HDR, and vacation scholar levels, facilitating engagement opportunities and promoting responsible conduct of research. Support the development of supervisees through mentoring and guidance.
  • Citizenship and Service: Demonstrate behaviours aligned with UQ values, provide leadership through mentoring and collaboration, and actively participate in School priorities. Contribute to internal service, including committee work and decision-making, support colleagues during absences, and develop external partnerships with industry, government, and professional bodies.

About You

Applicants should possess a Degree in Veterinary Science registrable in Queensland.

Additionally, you will demonstrate:

  • Post graduate research degree (PhD/ MPhil) in veterinary sciences, or a related discipline, will be desirable.
  • Advanced clinical studies such as a membership in avian, exotics, wildlife or a related discipline, or an established track record in veterinary practice will be desirable.
  • Educational qualifications, such as graduate certificates, diplomas, fellowships or equivalent will be desirable.
  • Evidence of high-quality university teaching in veterinary science across a variety of settings, including small and large groups with course coordination responsibilities.
  • An emerging profile of teaching impact in the discipline and/or emerging profile in education research in the discipline and/or emerging research profile with high-quality outputs in the discipline.
  • Participation in projects that improve curriculum, pedagogy, or assessment practices of others, with funded projects being particularly desirable and/or a record of contributing successfully to applications for research funds.
  • Participation in curriculum development at the program and/or course level in the discipline area.
  • Evidence of the involvement in the supervision of honours and Research Higher Degree students (where appropriate) in education research and/or discipline research will be desirable.
  • Well-developed communication, interpersonal and consultative skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in teaching and learning.
  • A profile of professional expertise that complements and/or supplements the expertise that currently exists within the School and the broader University.
