The Department of War Studies is a large and diverse Department with a wide range of theoretical and methodological expertise in areas including, but not limited to, conflict resolution, contemporary and historical warfare, gender, international relations, migration and borders, security studies, strategic studies, technology and violence. The Department is located within the School of Security Studies and the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy.

About the role

The Department of War Studies seeks to appoint a Lecturer in War Studies Education to contribute to the Department’s teaching and research capacity in international relations. This is a 2-year, fixed term post. The post is on the Academic Education Pathway (AEP) and is focused on the delivery of education, education-related scholarship and leadership in education.

The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering high-quality, innovative undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching and for advancing the understanding of war and contemporary conflict. The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of teaching on the BA and MA programmes in War Studies as well as to optional modules that are available to all students in the Department. Areas of teaching needed include the theory and practice of war, as well as insurgency and covert conflict. The successful candidate will work with students from a wide range of backgrounds and will be responsible for enabling student success.

The postholder will also undertake and publish high-quality scholarship and play a role in the institutional and intellectual development of War Studies and undertake Departmental, School, Faculty and University administrative duties as required.

Appointments can only be made at Lecturer level. It will not be possible to make appointments at more senior grades, or to exceed the salary advertised. This is a full time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract until August 2027.

About you

Essential criteria

  • PhD awarded in War/Conflict/Security Studies, International Relations, or a related field, with expertise in the theory and practice of war, including covert wars and/or insurgency
  • Ability to deliver innovative and effective teaching to undergraduate and/or postgraduate students, particularly in the teaching areas specified above
  • An emerging track record of publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills and proficiency in academic writing
  • Evidence of contribution to diversity and inclusion within a higher education setting
  • For an appointment at Grade 7, candidates must have a PhD thesis published or in press as a monograph AND at least 2 papers published/in press in peer-reviewed; OR at least 5 research papers published/in press in high-quality peer reviewed journals. For an appointment at Grade 7, candidates must also show proven ability in and experience of academic leadership

Desirable criteria

  • Emerging track record in dissemination of teaching innovations and engagement with external bodies
  • Experience supervising UG/PGT dissertations and/or PhD students
  • Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) or on-track to receive fellowship in the next 1-2 years
  • A track record of wider administrative contribution to the delivery of departmental activities
