Job description
The school of Engineering and Technology is seeking to appoint a Lecturer (Band 7/8 depending on the experience) in Medical Engineering with a focus on Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of soft tissues and biomaterials. This appointment aims to strengthen expertise in core medical engineering disciplines and expand our research and teaching capacity in the area biomechanics and FEA modelling.
With increasing global demand for new healthcare technologies, the department is committed to delivering high-quality education and impactful research in medical engineering. The post holder will work within the subject group of Medical Engineering contributing to teaching in the relevant discipline, and is expected to have knowledge, understanding and experience of delivering specialist and general course material to undergraduate and postgraduate students, from first principles, through to Masters level. We are particularly interested in candidates to play a key role in enhancing the delivery of modules related to medical imaging, FEA modelling and biomechanics, and supporting curriculum development in alignment with industry needs.
Candidates are expected to demonstrate strong academic credentials and the ability to contribute to both taught and research-led activities within the department.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities of the Post
The postholder is required to have expertise in Medical Engineering, with specialist knowledge in the following areas:
- Anatomy and physiology of human body
- Biomechanics
- FEA modelling of biomaterials and soft tissue
- Medical imaging and processing
Desirable:
- Background in Mechanical/Medical Engineering or project-based applications.
- Engagement with industry partners and external funding bodies.
Key responsibilities include:
- Delivering high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in core and specialist medical engineering modules.
- Supporting the continued development and innovation of medical engineering curricula.
- Supervising final year projects and MSc dissertations.
- Contributing to the department’s research profile through publications, grant capture, and collaborative work.
- Participating in academic administration and student support activities.
- Engaging with external stakeholders including industry partners and professional institutions (e.g., IMechE and IPEM).
Person Specification
Essential:
- A PhD in Medical Engineering or a closely related field
- Demonstrable expertise and experience in FEA modelling, biomechanics, soft tissue characterisation and Medical Imaging.
- Evidence of successful teaching or demonstrator experience in relevant subjects.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to excellence in teaching, learning, and student engagement.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.
Desirable:
- Prior involvement in medical engineering or project-based applications.
- Record of research publication and/or grant applications.
- Experience in supervising undergraduate or postgraduate students.
- Familiarity with computational modelling tools such as Abaqus etc
- Familiarity with computer aided design tools such as SolidWorks.
- Familiarity with simulation and signal processing tools such as MATLAB, LabView etc
