Lecturer or Assistant Professor - Teaching Stream in the Bachelor of Media Production and Design Program

The School of Journalism and Communication invites applications from qualified candidates for a 12-month Term Position appointment in the Bachelor of Media Production and Design Program (BMPD) at the rank of Lecturer or Assistant Professor - Teaching Stream (depending on qualifications) beginning July 1, 2026.

The successful candidate will teach a total of six introductory undergraduate courses (three courses per term, in some cases including two sections of the same course) on digital storytelling and media design, including MPAD 2001: Visual Communications, MPAD 3002: Civic Engagement and Public Institutions (Context) and MPAD 3003: Civic Engagement and Public Institutions (Workshop) and at least one other additional course in the candidate's field of expertise. Courses include topics such as civic engagement, media writing, digital storytelling, visual communications, and social media, with a focus on designing interactive digital stories, project development, and public engagement for fact-based storytelling and communication. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the program through involvement with student-centered events/projects, recruitment, and service. No research expectations are associated with this position.

About the Academic Unit: As part of the School of Journalism and Communication, Carleton's Journalism program is Canada's oldest, offering the Bachelor and Master of Journalism honours degrees and the Bachelor of Media Production and Design (BMPD) honours degree, launched in fall 2018. Our alumni are leaders in journalism, communication studies, politics, and the public service. The BMPD degree is an interdisciplinary digital storytelling program that is supported by courses in the Carleton School of Information Technology. Students in the program receive training in critical media studies, digital storytelling, media production tools, web development, and civic engagement. Qualifications: Applicants should hold a relevant degree or terminal degree (e.g., MFA) in a subject such as Digital Media, Journalism, Communication, Fine Arts, Film Studies, or disciplines relevant to visual design, storytelling, and interactive digital media. Applicants should have demonstrable experience teaching a variety of courses at the undergraduate level that involve both theory and practical components (e.g., lectures, workshops, art studios, etc.). Candidates are expected to have experience teaching hands-on digital media courses using current tools — such as podcasting, film, web design, and/or graphic design — and relevant software — such as the Adobe Creative Cloud (e.g., Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere, Audition) and/or other digital media tools (e.g. WordPress, Twine, ArcGIS, Lens Studio, etc.).
