The role

The School of Computer Science at the University of Bristol is seeking to grow our thriving and talented AI community by hiring two new AI faculty members. We have a long-standing track record for world-leading AI, and recent successes place us at the forefront of UK AI research and teaching. Bristol hosts Isambard AI, the UK’s national AI supercomputing facility, leads two of the UK’s nine UKRI National AI Research Hubs (in Collective Intelligence and Information Theory), runs back-to-back UKRI Centres for Doctoral Training in Interactive AI and Practice-Oriented AI, and has recently launched an innovative undergraduate degree in Computer Science with AI.

Bristol’s world-class AI research spans applied and theoretical work in intelligent agents, machine learning, machine vision, reasoning, and reinforcement learning, and tackles problems in multimodal and interactive AI. We solve interdisciplinary challenges in collaboration with researchers in creative technologies, the environmental and life sciences, and robotics, and hold joint appointments with industry including Google Deep Mind and Amazon. We encourage applicants from any area of AI to apply and are specifically interested in candidates with strengths in Natural Language Processing and AI Ethics and those that bring new kinds of AI expertise to the School.

The School values diversity and is committed to creating an inclusive environment where all staff can thrive. We particularly welcome applications from individuals who wish to work part-time, to job-share, or who require flexible working patterns. We are happy to discuss these possibilities with candidates at any stage of the recruitment process.

What will you be doing?

The postholder will contribute to the University’s impressive record of world-leading research (as demonstrated in REF 2021 which ranked the School 7th in the UK for CS research) and to developing and delivering the School’s education programmes (including our new undergraduate degree in Computer Science with AI). The School prides itself on its academic quality and its collegiality. We are incredibly proud of our outstanding working environment with a dedicated professional services team, a very high standard of achievement in research and education, and a culture of inclusivity and kindness.

You should apply if

Candidates will have a PhD in Computer Science or a closely related discipline (or equivalent industrial experience) and a track record of publishing in top academic venues and applying for external funding appropriate to their career stage. The potential for leadership, undertaking research collaborations with colleagues from top international labs, and collaborating on impactful translation of ideas with relevant industrial partners is desirable. The successful candidate will be able to design and deliver excellent teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and will be committed to making the most of growing opportunities in this area.
