Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Experimental Mechanics- ACAD107607

The role

The School of Electrical, Electronic and Mechanical Engineering is seeking to appoint a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Experimental Mechanics. This role presents an opportunity to advance research and teaching in experimental mechanics, particularly in the performance and integrity of metallic materials. The successful candidate will join the solid mechanics research group, known for its industry-focused research addressing real-world challenges. The School is part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, which fosters cross-disciplinary collaboration and is committed to research excellence and global impact.

What will you be doing?

As a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer, you will conduct internationally recognised research in experimental mechanics, with a particular emphasis on the integrity and performance of metallic components. Your work will contribute to solving significant industrial challenges and align with the ongoing research within the solid mechanics research group. You will be expected to secure external research funding and collaborate with industry partners.

In addition to research, you will contribute to the development and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in materials engineering, manufacturing, and structural performance. This will include supervising student projects, supporting innovation in teaching methods, and engaging in cross-Faculty research initiatives. There will also be opportunities for leadership roles that will shape the strategic direction of the School’s academic and research activities.

You should apply if

You have a strong research background in experimental mechanics, with expertise in high-temperature materials performance, fracture and fatigue mechanics, environmental damage, or advanced manufacturing processes. A demonstrated ability to secure research funding from industry, government bodies, or research councils is essential. Candidates should have a clear and innovative vision for future research that compliments and enhances the existing activities of the solid mechanics group. A commitment to high-quality teaching and the ability to develop and deliver engaging education in materials engineering and structural performance are required. We particularly welcome candidates with a collaborative research approach, strong industry networks, and a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. If you are enthusiastic about making a significant impact in both research and teaching, we encourage you to apply.
