Lecturer Visual and Multimodal Anthropology

Do you have a background in Visual Anthropology, Multimodal Anthropology, and Anthropology of Media? Are you an innovative and inspiring teacher? The Institute of Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology is looking for a new lecturer to join the team at the Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Leiden University.

What you will do: Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology (CADS) at Leiden University studies the everyday practices of individuals, groups, and communities worldwide, to situate them within complex global challenges. The CADS research program focuses on three areas: Sustainability, Diversity, and Digitalization. CADS aims to strengthen its team in the field of Multimodal Anthropology and Visual and Sonic Ethnography. The candidate will teach courses at Bachelor and Master’s level, such as Expanded Ethnography, Mediated Anthropology, and Visual Ethnography, and supervise B.Sc. and/or M.Sc. theses.

Where you will work: The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences consists of five institutes and has approximately 7000 students and 1000 staff members. The institute concentrates on 'global vulnerability and social resilience' with themes including Diversity, Sustainability, and Digitalization. It uses a unique approach blending qualitative, quantitative, audiovisual, and digital methods based on ethnographic fieldwork.

What you bring: Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Anthropology, have thorough knowledge of Visual Anthropology and Anthropology of Media, a promising publication record, experience in film-making and teaching visual and sonic ethnographic methods, and be innovative teachers committed to undergraduate and graduate courses. Applicants should be willing to obtain a Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) if not already possessed.

What we offer: A temporary employment contract for one year starting per 1 December 2025 or 1 January 2026, with a salary of €3,546 to €6,433 gross per month based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week). Benefits include a holiday allowance (8%), an end-of-year bonus (8.3%), an attractive pension scheme, flexible working hours, and options for secondary employment conditions such as hybrid working within the Netherlands.
