The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, and the Office of Undergraduate Education Curriculum Support at the University of Michigan invite a LEO Intermittent Lecturer position at 22.22% effort for the Fall Half Term 2026 for ALA 170, Leading without Authority, 1-credit course. This appointment is scheduled to begin on 11/01/26 and end on 12/31/26.

Duties of this Intermittent Lecturer position are expected to include teaching, developing course materials, evaluating and grading students, and holding regularly scheduled office hours. A typical full-time (100% effort) load for an Intermittent Lecturer in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is three courses per semester. Full-time and part-time positions are available.

Course Title(s): ALA 170 - Applied Liberal Arts Topics, Section 001 - Leading without Authority
Tu 11:00AM - 1:00PM

Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Define leadership as influence, not position, and identify real-life opportunities to lead without formal authority.
  2. Develop strategies for initiating change in complex systems or groups where they lack direct power.
  3. Build policy and systems awareness, recognizing how informal power, credibility, and networks can be used to shape outcomes.
  4. Explore their identity and confidence in stepping into leadership roles that are less visible, less central, or less traditional.
  5. Create a personal influence plan that outlines how they will take initiative and create impact in a specific area of their life.

Required Qualifications:
Master's degree in Leadership, Public Policy, Organizational Studies, Education, or a related field. Demonstrated experience teaching, training, coaching, or mentoring individuals or groups. Strong communication skills and the ability to engage undergraduate students in active learning. Ability to create an environment that supports student growth in confidence, initiative, and ethical leadership.

The selection criteria used for this search are based on how the applicant's education and experience meet the required minimum qualifications for the position. Excellence in teaching and instruction will be the principal criterion used to select the successful candidate.

Preferred Qualifications:
Background in leadership development, coaching, facilitation, organizational behavior, public policy, or a related field. Prior experience working with the University of Michigan, particularly the Barger Leadership Institute, in instructional, leadership development, coaching, or related educational roles. Demonstrated experience working with emerging leaders, early-career professionals, or undergraduate students. Ability to translate complex leadership concepts into practical tools that students can apply immediately.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
