Job Summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated individual to provide high-quality, proactive library services to Imperial College London’s Faculty of Medicine. This is a challenging, complex role encompassing high level liaison and relationship management, design and delivery of research and teaching support, management of a medium-sized team, management of services at the designated campus library and planning and delivery of library projects.

Duties and responsibilities

The Library Manager and Liaison Librarian will develop relationships with a broad range of stakeholders and act as the primary contact between the Library and the Faculty of Medicine on the designated campus. They will work with colleagues to design and deliver a full range of embedded and standalone teaching and frequent 1:1 support for students and researchers in the Faculty of Medicine.

The postholder is responsible for management of the Charing Cross campus library including management of the library team. They are responsible for health and safety management and the co-ordination of activities with other campus libraries.

The postholder will be expected to continually develop their knowledge and skills. Expertise and a professional interest in areas such as information literacy, systematic review methodology, active/technology enhanced learning, generative AI, and scholarly communication and teaching and learning are required.

Essential requirements

  • Education to degree level, or equivalent experience.
  • Substantial experience in delivering library services within a higher education/healthcare/research environment.
  • A demonstrable track record of providing training and support for library users on a 1:1 basis and in large groups, both face to face and online.
  • Substantial experience in providing support in the use of information resources using expert knowledge to satisfy in-depth, complex enquiries.
  • Proven competence and experience of successfully managing staff.
  • Experience of providing support to the research community including familiarity with one or more of the following areas: open access publishing, research data management or bibliometrics.
  • A good working knowledge of the issues, trends, and discussions around Open Access publishing in the UK.
  • Understanding and awareness of current and emerging teaching/learning practices.
  • An understanding of the research life cycle and requirements of a scientific research community.
  • Demonstrable evidence of strong advocacy and influencing skills and an ability to interact and build working relationships with a wide range of people.
  • Excellent organisational and time-management skills.
  • An enthusiastic, self-motivated team player, flexible and co-operative, coupled with a high level of personal responsibility and initiative with a committed to contributing to team goals.
  • Excellent, proven customer care skills with experience of working in a frontline service environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, required to deliver teaching and liaise with varied stakeholder.
  • Well-developed ICT skills, including some or all of the following: MS Office, Library Management Systems (LMS), VLEs, reading lists software and generative AI tools.
