The Rutgers–Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Licensed Practical Nurse, in collaboration with physicians, nursing staff, and other members of the healthcare team, provides focused, technical nursing care to clinical and office operations.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Provides and documents nursing care within the scope of practice for colorectal surgery patients in face-to-face and telephone encounters; provides input to the plan of care by communicating information pertinent to the patient's status to the physician and other members of the healthcare team as appropriate and in a timely manner.
- May be required to travel to offsite locations to assist providers during clinic hours, including Steeplechase Cancer Center.
- Assists physicians and advanced practice nurse during scheduled office hours, including preparation and setup of clinic exam and procedure rooms for patient visits. Assists in office procedures. Reviews and prepares patient charts prior to office visits for essential paperwork and test results.
- Places orders and obtains insurance precertification for prescribed clinical testing for special procedures (CT, MRI, Ultrasound etc.) Provide patients with results of prescribed clinical tests after discussing them with the appropriate physicians.
- Coordinates pre-operative testing and medical clearance prior to surgical procedures. Calls patients to check in pre- and post-operatively.
- Completes return to work/school letters and disability paperwork for patients.

Work Environment: Moderate noise environment with some exposure (less than 1/3 of the time) to blood borne pathogens requiring the use of personal protective equipment; some potential exposure (less than 1/3 of the time) to hazardous waste.
