Job Description Summary

We are currently recruiting for two (2) licensing officer positions, with one reporting to the Executive Director of Licensing and one reporting to the Associate Director of Licensing for the Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM).

Each of these positions will work as an individual or with colleagues in the PSOM licensing team, as applicable, to (a) identify, evaluate, protect, and market technologies with commercial potential from PSOM, (b) develop strong working relationships with PSOM investigators and support all activities associated with technology commercialization,(c) identify, evaluate and implement research collaborations with industry on behalf of PSOM researchers, (d) negotiate option and license agreements for intellectual property and tangible materials with established companies and start-ups, and (e) support the management of company relationships post-agreement execution. This individual will function as a team player who strongly supports the efforts of the PSOM licensing team and the entire PCI organization, and will provide outstanding customer and client service in all areas of effort and interaction.

Job Responsibilities

  • Working as an individual or with colleagues in the PSOM licensing team, develop strong working relationships with faculty, staff and graduate students in PSOM.
  • Working as an individual or with colleagues in the PSOM licensing team, evaluate technology disclosures to determine their commercial potential and to develop and recommend well-articulated and diligently justified "go-no-go" decisions regarding pursuing patent protection at weekly Patent Investment Meeting (PIM).
  • Working as an individual or with colleagues in the PSOM licensing team, develop commercialization strategies for technology portfolios. Perform marketing analysis to include identification of, and marketing to, targeted commercial partners and investors. Prepare non-confidential marketing materials for assigned technologies, with the assistance of PCI's Marketing, Communications and Programs (MCP)team, as appropriate.
  • Working as an individual or with colleagues in the PSOM licensing team: (i) identify potential industry partners and investors; (ii) perform due diligence on potential commercial partners; (iii) perform technology valuation; (iv) initiate and lead the construction and negotiation of licensing and option agreements; (v)assist with sponsored research agreements, as required; and(vi) be responsive to the needs of key internal and external PCI clients.
  • Work with the Executive Director to organize and participate in outreach activities to engage and educate PSOM faculty about technology commercialization and programs to engage corporate partners to work more closely with Penn.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • The Licensing Officer must have a Bachelor's degree and 5-7 years or equivalent combination of education and experience required. An advanced degree is preferred, such as a M.S. in a in a life/health sciences related field, and strong preference will be given to candidates with a Ph.D. in these fields.
  • The preferred candidate will also have 1-2 years of experience in technology transfer, business development or equivalent intellectual property or business development experience.
  • The preferred candidate must be a dedicated team player, have outstanding customer service skills, demonstrate exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, exhibit technical skills and business acumen, and must be able to interact effectively in an academic and corporate environment.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who are knowledgeable about intellectual property and licensing practices.
  • The candidate will be proficient at multitasking and be an independent self-starter with strong work ethic.
  • The Licensing Officer must be able to manage a diverse set of relationships, tasks and projects, and to be able to identify and handle inventions in a variety of fields outside of their own area of technical expertise. Strong negotiation skills are preferred- along with an ability to excel in a relatively independent and flexible work environment.
  • Attention to detail and an ability to follow-through tasks to completion are requisite skills for the position.

Pay Range: $76,000.00 - $90,000.00 Annual Rate
