Life Science Research Prof 3/4

Life Science Research Professional 3/4

The Czechowicz Lab within the Division of Hematology, Oncology, Stem Cell Transplantation and Regenerative Medicine, in the Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine is seeking a motivated, friendly and well-organized Life Science Research Professional 3/4 to join their team. This a dynamic and stimulating place to work, focused on excellence in research, education and patient care and the LSRP 3/4 would be a welcome addition to strengthen the groups efforts. The Czechowicz lab is focused on hematopoietic stem cell biology and further exploring how hematopoietic stem cells interact with their microenvironment through basic science and translational medicine particularly in bone marrow failure, immune deficiencies and/or leukemia to ultimately improve outcomes for these patients and many others.

The laboratory has previously conducted pioneering work demonstrating that hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) depletion is a critical component to donor HSC engraftment. They have developed multiple pre-clinical agents that enable safe and targeted HSC conditioning, several of which are turning into promising clinical therapies. They are now using these agents as probes to understand underlying hematopoietic biology and are applying these to the treatment of candidate diseases of great need. They are further augmenting this work with complementary efforts in therapeutic gene modification. They are primarily focused on genetic and malignant blood and immune diseases (e. g. immunodeficiencies, bone marrow failure and leukemia), but this work could also potentially be expanded to other organ systems as well. The ideal candidate would be able to seamlessly integrate into the group to lead basic and translational projects, including assessment of correlative studies from clinical trials. They would also be able to oversee others, lead large collaborative projects and support with research proposals/grant funding. Technical expertise in flow cytometry is critical in this work, and the individual will also be responsible for overseeing the lab's flow cytometer and assisting in laboratory management with others on the team. The individual will also be expected to onboard, teach and train new lab members.

The lab strives to maintain a highly collaborative, dynamic and positive environment. The LSRP 3/4 would be a great addition to the team and help with exciting basic and translational experiments that hopefully will result in exciting new therapies for patients.

Specifically, the LSRP 3/4 will be asked to perform complex functions and activities involved in defined research projects, independently conduct a major portion of the research project(s) and assist with lab management.

Duties include:

  • Design research approaches for a major portion of research project(s), including background research, experimental design and execution, problem-solving, and writing up for publication.
  • Develop new protocols test and evaluate a variety of approaches.
  • Perform complex (lab and/or field) experiments, and maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes analyze and interpret research data resulting from original procedures and methods.
  • Assist with new research proposals and applications for funding and grants.
  • Lead or participate in multidisciplinary teams across different faculties or schools.
  • Prepare periodic progress reports or written reports on all phases of research projects.
  • Contribute substantively to the preparation of papers for publication, especially in the results section and be a co-author on publications. Present ongoing work and findings to colleagues at academic conferences.
  • Perform ongoing literature review to remain current with new procedures and related research propose new research directions based on new advances discussed in literature.
  • Oversee supply and equipment budget under minimal supervision of principal investigator or business manager.
  • Work with health and safety department to ensure lab complies with regulations and all required trainings.
  • Formally supervise and train new staff or students as needed, including hiring, performance management, and related duties, in addition to instruction on techniques and consultation on project work.
  • - Other duties may also be assigned
