Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada, and on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and Wendat Peoples, the School of Professional Communication (ProCom) at The Creative School at Toronto Metropolitan University [www.torontomu.ca] (formerly Ryerson University) invites applications for a Limited Term Faculty (LTF) position at the rank of Assistant Professor in areas of professional communication. The appointment shall be effective July 1, 2026 for a one-year term, subject to final budgetary approval.

The successful candidate will engage only in the teaching and service duties of faculty members in the School, while maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across such activities. The candidate will contribute to our undergraduate (BA) and graduate (MA/PhD) programs through teaching, mentoring and supervision of students to facilitate junior scholars and diversify the field.

Responsibilities will include teaching and coordinating a variety of undergraduate courses, including multi-section courses such as CMN 100 Professional Health Communication, CMN 279 Introduction to Professional Communication, CMN 300 Communication in the Computer Industry, CMN 432 Communication in the Engineering Professions, and lecture courses such as CMN 210 Text, Image, Sound, and CMN 601 Visual Communication. Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to supervise graduate students in ProCom master’s program. The successful candidate will also participate in administrative activities in ProCom and will collaborate with partners within and beyond Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU).

Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in Communication Studies or a closely related field by the appointment date. In addition, the successful candidate must present evidence of:

  • experience teaching core skills and principles of professional communication;
  • teaching experience in at least two of the following areas: business communication, STEM communication, visual communication, digital communication and/or public relations.
  • excellence in teaching through a teaching dossier that outlines the teaching philosophy, teaching accomplishments, including experience with course/curriculum review/development, excellent pedagogical practice, sample syllabi and teaching evaluations;
  • experience in teaching online (both synchronous and asynchronous) and in person;
  • experience teaching and/or coordinating multi-section classes;
  • strong communication skills and a demonstrated ability to supervise undergraduate and graduate students;
  • an ability to approach theories and practices of professional communication in ways that are innovative, interdisciplinary, and informed by critical perspectives;
  • teaching which integrates the values of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion as it pertains to service and teaching, including a demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; and
  • an ability to contribute to the life of the School and the University through collegial service.

Note: Limited Term Faculty appointments at Toronto Metropolitan University may not exceed a combined total of four years. Applicants with prior Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University) LTF appointments need to consider this limitation, as it may render them ineligible to apply.

This position falls under the jurisdiction of the Toronto Metropolitan Faculty Association (TFA) [www.tfanet.ca]. Salary will commensurate with qualifications.
