Low Carbon Concrete Modular Pavement Design
About the Project
Challenges facing the sustainability impact of concrete in 21st century construction includes unsustainable Embodied CO2 (ECO2) with over-reliance of natural aggregate that contribute to diverse anthropogenic effects. These influence on climate change including greenhouse gases (GHG), urban heat island (UHI), acid rain, and other environmental risks associated to heat and pollution. The increase in waste generation and disposal demand is also a critical issue due to the tremendous impact from Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW). Therefore, adopting the "4R approach: reduce, reuse, recycle and recover” is crucial to address the environmental issues caused by these increasing wastes.
This research necessitates the development of new design(s) of low carbon concrete modular pavement with an improved construction method in compliance with the new BS paving design which uses recycled materials and low carbon cement in offsetting certain percentage of primary construction materials for environmental friendliness as well as reducing its cost.
