Job Description Summary
The New Bolton Center campus of the University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine has an ongoing need for Maintenance Mechanics. The Maintenance Mechanic is a multi-trade technician who works with a team of mechanics to maintain campus buildings and ensure the proper maintenance of all aspects of our operations. The position must have demonstrated vocational experience in one of the plumbing, HVAC or electrical trades with multiple years of field experience.
The Maintenance Mechanic performs inspections, installations, repairs, maintenance, and monitors building equipment with a working knowledge of HVAC systems, electrical systems up to 480 volts and plumbing equipment. Ensures operation of machinery and mechanical equipment by completing preventative maintenance requirements on motors, pumps, compressors, controls and building automation systems.
Job Description
Must have the ability to perform repairs or replacements on various types of plumbing fixtures, including lavatories, sinks, water closets, urinals, water coolers and their related valves, faucets and flushometers. Locating, installing, connecting and testing of drain, vent, water and wastewater piping systems. Able to install new plumbing fixtures, pipes of varying sizes and material as well as installations of lab equipment that require gas, vacuum or water pipe. Able to troubleshoot, diagnose and repair pumps, controls and sumps utilized in wastewater or HVAC equipment.
Job responsibilities include:
- Perform inspections of building aspects to ensure their proper operation.
- Manage multiple projects to completion, including providing estimates of material costs and determining any equipment necessary to complete a task.
- Complete repairs to plumbing equipment to resolve equipment breakdowns. Inspection and troubleshooting of the existing equipment.
- Installation of new equipment or completion of construction projects as outlined by the Director of Facilities.
- Troubleshoot campus plumbing systems to determine the cause of equipment failures and return systems to normal operations with minimal downtime.
- Respond to building occupant requests regarding the operation of the building or their equipment within the building.
- Repairs and maintenance to aspects of the campus-wide potable and wastewater systems that serve all buildings on campus.
The New Bolton Center campus is located in Kennett Square, PA, where there is no public transportation. You must have your own reliable transportation.
Qualifications
Demonstrated experience with various soldering techniques in the installation or repair of plumbing systems. Proper use of hand and power tools utilized in the plumbing trade for drain cleanout and other confined space entry. Successful candidates will have demonstrated the ability to install, maintain, repair, troubleshoot all equipment associated with plumbing to include but not limited to: overhead and underground piping, bathroom fixtures and facilities, manual, electronic and automatic valves, cooper, black, galvanized and plastic piping, drinking water and wastewater equipment, potable and heater water equipment, hot water heaters, ice machines and pumps. Must have experience in the field, including the ability to read and interpret blueprints and shop drawings.
Must possess a valid driver's license, free of any state or municipal suspension or revocation. Familiarity with HVAC systems, including troubleshooting, will be expected during on-call work. Preferred candidates will have professional licenses and certifications or have completed an apprentice program. Must be able to work in a multi-skilled environment.
Senior Maintenance Mechanic: High School Diploma or GED, vocational certification, and 5 to 7 years of demonstrated experience performing plumbing, electrical or HVAC work as a licensed professional. Equivalent vocational training may be substituted for work experience. Professional certifications or licenses are strongly preferred.
Maintenance Mechanic: High School Diploma or GED, vocational certification, and 3 to 5 years of demonstrated experience performing plumbing, HVAC or electrical in a professional capacity. Equivalent vocational training may be substituted for work experience. Professional certifications or licenses are strongly preferred.
The schedule is primarily Monday through Friday during normal business hours. However, the position will require some weekend work on a rotational basis and must be part of the department's on-call rotation. Working conditions include alternative work schedules, outdoor exposure to weather, high noise environment, high dust, dirt, grease environment, exposure to moving machinery, typically standing or walking, frequent lifting 25 lbs. or more, climbing ladders/scaffolds, and using tools requiring high dexterity. Must be physically able to lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted. Ability to climb and work from ladders or scaffolding.
