Maintenance Technician II - Electrical Emphasis (Basic Electrical Repairs)

Position Summary

The Maintenance Technician II - Electrical Emphasis performs semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of University facilities, with a focus on basic electrical repair and troubleshooting. This position supports the daily upkeep of buildings, systems, and equipment to ensure a safe, functional, and comfortable campus environment.

The technician participates in an on-call rotation and must be available to respond to after-hours maintenance emergencies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform basic electrical repairs such as replacing light fixtures, bulbs, switches, outlets, and breakers.
  • Troubleshoot and repair minor electrical issues under the direction of senior staff or supervisors.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance and testing on emergency lighting, exit signs, and small electrical equipment.
  • Assist with generator testing, fire alarm resets, power-outage responses, and elevator resets.
  • Perform equipment upkeep such as sweeper repair and other small machinery maintenance.
  • Respond to emergency calls including roof leaks, alarm resets, elevator issues, and immediate maintenance needs.
  • Perform general building maintenance including basic plumbing, HVAC, and carpentry repairs.
  • Replace ceiling tiles, blinds, windows, and flooring as needed; install glass in windows, doors, and partitions.
  • Perform patch-and-paint repairs and other finish work.
  • Unclog toilets and drains; inspect and maintain roof drains to prevent leaks.
  • Conduct safety checks on fire extinguishers and eyewash stations.
  • Perform emergency light testing and repair; ensure exit signs are functioning properly.
  • Adjust and lubricate machinery and equipment to ensure proper operation; perform preventive maintenance as scheduled.
  • Operate machinery and assist other trades personnel and contractors as required.
  • Install furnishings and fixtures such as hanging pictures, whiteboards, and signage.
  • Maintain accurate records of work completed through the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Maintain tools, vehicles, and equipment in safe operating condition.
  • Provide excellent customer service and maintain a professional appearance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope and requirements of the job.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of building-maintenance experience with exposure to basic electrical repairs.
  • Working knowledge of electrical safety practices and basic electrical principles.
  • Ability to safely use electrical testing meters, hand tools, and maintenance equipment.
  • Basic understanding of plumbing, HVAC, and carpentry systems.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions in English.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Outlook, Windows, and maintenance software).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of trade-school coursework in electrical or building maintenance.
  • Experience in an institutional, educational, or commercial maintenance environment.
  • Familiarity with work-order systems such as Asset Essentials or similar CMMS platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic electrical troubleshooting and repair
