Manager 1, Husbandry Operations
Overview
Reporting to the Unit Manager, with latitude to exercise discretion and independence, supervises the daily operation of a subset of a YARC Unit’s facilities. Supervise the C&T staff within the facilities and provide additional support to the Unit Manager for all facilities within the Unit, as needed. Identify and implement methods to continually enhance operational efficiency, consistency and effectiveness of the operations within the Unit.
Essential Duties
- Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise and organize the work of animal technician and sanitation staff performing duties within a subset of the Unit. Implement and enforce performance standards for staff. Evaluate performance, hire staff as approved; recommend staff for transfer or promotion to the Unit Manager. Initiate and conduct disciplinary meetings and provide documentation and follow up to the Unit Manager.
- Responsible for the development and analysis of unit-based reports and schedules to ensure operational efficiency. Develop and implement contingency plans and redirect staff for coverage of scheduled and unscheduled interruptions to the daily operation of the Unit. Ensure that staff are assigned to work duties appropriate to the grade level/s and provide mentoring and/or training, in conjunction with the Training Manager, to staff at all levels.
- Ensure performance within assigned facilities of the unit is in compliance with Federal, State, Local and University regulations. Provide time-sensitive responses and implementation of corrective actions to inspection deficiency notifications or quality control reports.
- Proactively develop and maintain relationships with the Yale laboratories in your unit to ensure that customers can easily bring forward needs and concerns to the right YARC entity and are kept informed of recent developments in YARC that may impact them. Solicit feedback to help determine areas of service improvement or areas that YARC Operations can facilitate discussions with other departments to improve processes.
- Analyze animal-related research project requests, assess investigator requirements and determine best methods, within operational guidelines, for meeting investigator requests. Investigate and resolve customer service-related questions, concerns or complaints from investigators. Act as a liaison between investigators and animal technician staff to ensure quality customer relations and service. Escalate to and collaborate with the Unit Manager to resolve more complex issues.
- Oversight of and assistance in building, developing, and leading teams of staff tasked with solving problems and continuously improving YARC processes per the needs of the unit. Demonstrate high enthusiasm and motivation while encouraging the team to stretch, learn and reach for goals and solutions.
- Oversee submission and accuracy of personnel time-keeping records.
- Provide regular weekend supervision of animal technician staff across all units. Participate in supervisory coverage of holidays and M&P benefit time on a rotating schedule. Exemplify flexibility by accommodating special projects and changes to the Unit structure as directed by the Unit Manager.
- Evaluate new equipment and adapt current processes to continually optimize the operation of the animal facility and washrooms to improve safety, efficiency, and quality. Provide recommendations to the Unit Manager.
- Attends relevant seminars and conferences as necessary to stay current in field of laboratory animal technology and logistics and develop Lean Six Sigma skills to enhance process efficiencies and problem-solving techniques.
Work Schedule
Tuesday - Saturday, 7:00 - 3:30
Will be required to obtain a BSL‑3 Select Agent Compliance Certification, which includes completing a federal background check.
Must Pass YARC (Yale Animal Resources Center) Health Screening. This form is filed with Employee Health in a confidential file specific to employees who work at YSM Buildings. Offer is contingent upon successful passing of health screening.
Skills & Abilities
- Strongly demonstrated experience working with animals.
- Strong computer skills including intermediate proficiency with Excel.
- Excellent presentation, communications (oral and written) and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to foster a service team environment.
Preferred Skills
- Supervisory and management skills.
- Working knowledge of Labor Relations, contract administration and Human Resources issues.
- Experience working in a laboratory animal science environment.
- Experience with data analysis.
Preferred Certification
- Advanced certification by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science
- Lean Six Sigma Certifications
Required Education and Experience
Minimum requirement of Bachelor’s Degree in related field and three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
