James Cook University (JCU) is seeking an experienced and strategic leader for a joint appointment across two closely aligned roles supporting medical education and workforce development in Northern Queensland. 

This appointment brings together a continuing role and a fixed-term role through a single recruitment process. The successful candidate will hold two concurrent contracts, each aligned to its respective role profile and funding source. 

About the role 

Reporting to the College Operations Manager, this role works closely with the Medicine discipline with a particular focus on Townsville, including the Townsville Clinical School sites. This role also contributes to delivering the Commonwealth-funded Regional Training Hubs program for the Townsville region. 

  • The Manager, Regional Medical Training (0.75 FTE continuing component) focuses on leadership and delivery of the MBBS program in Townsville. 
  • The Manager, Regional Training Hubs (0.25 FTE fixed-term component), current funding to 31 December 2026, supports the strategic and operational delivery of the Regional Training Hubs program and may be extended subject to ongoing funding. 

What this means for you 

  • This is a full-time equivalent role (1.0 FTE / 36.25 hours per week) made up of two linked appointments: 

- 0.75 FTE continuing – Manager, Regional Medical Training 

- 0.25 FTE fixed-term – Manager, Regional Training Hubs (to 31 December 2026)_ 

  • You will hold two concurrent contracts, but work in one integrated role. 
  • The fixed-term component is dependent on program funding and may be extended. 
  • If the fixed-term component concludes, the continuing 0.75 FTE role will remain ongoing. 

Key responsibilities 

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership and work collaboratively with the Academic staff across both Regional Medical Training and Regional Training Hubs 
  • Lead and manage multidisciplinary, distributed teams across multiple sites 
  • Ensure high-quality delivery of undergraduate medical education and regional training initiatives 
  • Build and maintain strong partnerships with hospitals, health services, GP practices, Specialist Colleges, accreditation bodies, and government stakeholders 
  • Contribute to strategic planning, governance, policy development, and continuous improvement 
  • Monitor performance outcomes, operational data, and sector trends to ensure effective and compliant service delivery

You are an experienced leader with strong judgement, the ability to manage complexity, and a collaborative approach to stakeholder engagement. 

You will bring: 

  • Qualifications and experience appropriate to a HEWL 8 role under the Enterprise Agreement 
  • Proven senior leadership and people management experience, ideally in health, education, or regional service delivery 
  • Highly developed communication, negotiation, and influencing skills 
  • Experience operating in complex, multi-site or regional environments
