Overview
A candidate for a Marine Environmental Science doctoral programme from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is expected to demonstrate mastery of knowledge in the chosen discipline and to synthesize and create new knowledge, making an original and substantial contribution to the discipline.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the PhD programme, graduates will be able to:
- Understand the literatures and research methods/techniques applicable to ocean science.
- Evaluate current research in one or more subdisciplines of ocean science relevant to a selected research specialty.
- Demonstrate mastery of laboratory, theoretical, and/or computational skills necessary to contribute to knowledge in a subdiscipline of ocean science.
- Propose, plan and conduct a scientifically robust research project related to oceanic systems; and apply appropriate methods for analysing and interpreting experimental/observational/modelling data.
- Communicate scientific ideas and results clearly and effectively with peers (both in writing and verbally).
- Understand complex issues in ethical scientific conduct.
