Essential Job Duties:
Primary Duties
The Communications Manager leads strategic communications, branding, and content development for the statewide SBTDC program. This role ensures consistent messaging, visual identity, and effective communication across multiple platforms while supporting the organization's mission, programs, and strategic priorities. Working collaboratively with staff across regional centers and the State Administrative Office, the Communications Manager provides expert guidance on communications strategy, manages key projects, and develops high-quality materials that engage stakeholders and promote SBTDC services.
25% - Communications (Oral & Written) - Advanced
Develop and implement strategic communications that advance SBTDC's mission and engage key audiences. Translate complex program information into clear, compelling messaging that supports organizational priorities and promotes services statewide.
Lead communications planning for departments, programs, and events by identifying stakeholder needs and developing targeted marketing and communications strategies. Produce and oversee a range of communications content, including press releases, success stories, marketing materials, and web and social media content.
Serve as the primary strategic consultant and representative for SBTDC, providing guidance on messaging, brand alignment, and communications strategy. Establish and maintain communications standards, editorial quality, and messaging consistency across all channels.
Plan and produce internal and external newsletters that share organizational updates, communications resources, and client-focused content. Provide training and mentorship to staff on communications best practices, writing, editing, and content development.
20% - Knowledge (Technical) - Advanced
Serve as a technical resource for communication design, visual storytelling, and digital content development. Apply advanced design principles and technology to produce effective communications materials for varied audiences.
Research, evaluate, and implement emerging tools, systems, and technologies that improve the development and delivery of communications. Stay current with industry trends and identify opportunities to enhance communications effectiveness.
Demonstrate proficiency in industry-standard tools and practices, including Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat), Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, photography, printing processes, and copyright standards.
Operates with a high level of independence as the lead communications professional supporting the statewide SBTDC program, advising leadership on communications tools, technologies, and strategies.
25% - Knowledge (Professional) - Advanced
Apply advanced expertise in writing, editing, and design to produce high-quality communications materials that support organizational goals and maintain a consistent brand identity.
Design and develop a wide range of communications materials, including publications, advertisements, brochures, flyers, stationery, event materials, signage, and digital content.
Support events through the creation of promotional materials such as postcards, handouts, and banners.
Oversee and maintain SBTDC's statewide Brand Standards guide and provide guidance to ensure consistent messaging and visual identity across all communications.
Serve as a communications resource to SBTDC regional centers statewide, consulting with Business Counselors and Center Directors to align local communications efforts with SBTDC's overall brand and communications strategy.
10% - Consulting / Advising - Journey
Provide communications best practices to SBTDC staff statewide on branding, marketing strategy, press releases, articles, event-related materials, and social media.
Ensure consistent presentation of SBTDC's messaging and visual identity across programs and locations.
Advise on and edit leadership communications, including talking points, executive correspondence, speeches, and client-facing messages. Collaborate with staff and partners to strengthen messaging and communications strategies.
10% - Project Management - Advanced
Independently manage communications projects by coordinating timelines, resources, and deliverables across the Communications Team.
Maintain the Print & Web Projects Calendar to track initiatives and ensure timely completion of communications work.
Recommend and implement project management tools to improve workflow efficiency. Coordinate meetings, monitor project progress, and ensure appropriate review and approvals for major communications projects.
10% - Organizational Sensitivity - Advanced
Support implementation of the SBTDC Strategic Plan through coordinated communications and branding initiatives.
Apply knowledge of the organization's structure, services, and stakeholders to guide effective communications efforts.
Develop and maintain strong working relationships with staff at the State Administrative Office and regional SBTDC centers statewide to ensure consistent, strategic communication and alignment with organizational priorities.
Other Work/Responsibilities:

Minimum Experience/Education:
- Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Required Qualifications:
- Excellent graphic design skills
- Superior written communication skills, including copywriting and editing
- Exceptional project management skills and attention to detail
- Strong marketing/branding knowledge
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Experience working collaboratively with marketing and web development team
- Proficient in the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat)
- Proficient in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
- Knowledge of printing processes, including pre-pressing and color modes
- Familiarity with copyright laws
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment
- Basic knowledge and experience using HTML 4/5 and CSS 3
- Experience designing HTML email marketing campaigns and newsletters
- Photography experience
- 2+ years of related experience
