Material Movement Specialist
Job Details
The Material Movement Specialist is responsible for working in a team environment, exercising good judgment, and providing support and supplies to the University for Special Events and moving various items for a wide variety of university departments.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Material Movement Specialist I and II
- Deliver items to and from central receiving and the 12th Street storage facility.
- Perform office moves for various departments.
- Assist other departments of the university in moving items from one area to the other.
- Assist with the setup and tear down of university events as needed.
- Operate pallet jacks, other necessary machinery, and occasional forklift use for moving various materials. A forklift certification may be necessary, but the certification courses are provided by the University.
- Clean and assist in routine maintenance of equipment.
- Strictly adheres to Liberty University policies, representing the University in an exemplary manner.
- Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s Christian model and Mission – Training Champions for Christ.
Material Movement Specialist Lead
- Proficiency in all functions and responsibilities of the Material Movement Specialists I and II
- Serve as a point of contact for escalations and questions related to material movement processes.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, team members, and other departments to coordinate work and solve problems.
- Lead a team of material handlers, providing direction, training, and support to ensure productivity and adherence to safety standards.
- Lead and coordinate daily material movement activities, ensuring timely and accurate transfers of goods within the warehouse and to other departments or locations.
- Ensure proper documentation and system entry for all material movements, including inbound, outbound, and internal transfers.
- Help to oversee the care and cleanliness of vehicles and equipment.

- Lead a team of material handlers, providing direction, training, and support to ensure productivity and adherence to safety standards.
QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS
Education and Experience
Material Movement Specialist I
- High School Diploma or GED is required
- Must be at least 21 years of age as deemed necessary by the requirements for becoming an LU-approved driver.
Material Movement Specialist II
- High School Diploma or GED is required
- At least 1–2 years of professional experience in a related field, such as material handling.
- Must be at least 21 years of age as deemed necessary by the requirements for becoming an LU-approved driver.
Material Movement Specialist Lead
- High School Diploma or GED is required
- At least 2–3 years of professional experience in a related field, such as material handling.
- Must be at least 21 years of age as deemed necessary by the requirements for becoming an LU-approved driver.
- Strong organizational and computer skills.
- Ability to successfully lead a team of 2 or 3 individuals.
ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES ESSENTIAL TO THE FUNCTION OF THE JOB
Communication and Comprehension
- Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to convey clear, well-articulated information.
- Ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner.
- Possess public communication skills that allow professional representation of Liberty University.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Computer skills when required.
Problem Solving
- Intuitively able to reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment in order to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature, including challenges such as maneuvering large objects and pieces of furniture.
Physical and Sensory Abilities
- Frequently required to travel to local and campus locations.
- Regularly required to hear and speak in order to effectively communicate orally.
- Frequently required to stand, walk, and climb stairs to move about the building.
- Frequently handle materials, reach overhead, kneel or stoop in order to conduct business.
- Regularly lift 125 or fewer pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work Environment
The working environment for this position includes both indoor and outdoor settings. The indoor conditions are generally climate-controlled, well-lit, and feature a moderate noise level. Outdoor weather can be unpredictable, with varying temperatures throughout the year, including both hot and cold conditions, as this is a year-round position.
Driving Requirements
If the employee is required to travel in performing the duties and responsibilities of the position, the use of one’s personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) may be required for travel. Must be at least 21 years of age as deemed necessary by the requirements for becoming an LU-approved driver. Proof of a valid driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, LU Driving Approval, and liability insurance is required when driving in the performance of the employee’s position.
