Offer Description
At the National University of Science and Technology “POLITEHNICA” Bucharest we are looking in the Materials Science and Engineering research group for a full-time position for a PhD candidate. The position is initially limited to a period of 3 years. An extension will be sought if suitable.
The Materials Science and Engineering research group is leaded by Prof. Iulian ANTONIAC, Full Professor and Coordinator is well known in the field of biomaterials and medical devices. They are experts in obtaining and processing metallic and composite biomaterials, structural characterization, the establishment of testing criteria and procedures, chemical, rheological, mechanical, and thermo-physical properties determination, surface analysis, biodegradation in simulated medium, interactions with cells and tissues, bone regeneration evaluation, medical devices testing and analysis.
The doctoral thesis will be in the context of the general MSCA-DN project RENOVATE (Regenerative engineering innovation in early intervention of osteoarthritis).
This project aims the following main objectives:
- Define patient-specific key functional and mechanical requirements for large osteochondral scaffolds.
- Produce biocompatible porous 3D structures that mimic osteochondral tissue native hierarchical structures starting from alternative biomaterials, bioinks and nanocomposites.
- Produce multi-material graded OC scaffolds according to patient-specific key functional and mechanical requirements developing a novel optimisation methodology to produce Functionally Graded Additive Manufacturing (FGAM) large osteochondral scaffolds.
Job description
Description of the proposed doctoral individual project:
The doctoral candidate will carry out the individual project titled: “Biodegradable Mg based alloy for optimal osteochondral scaffolds”
Objectives: To develop new complex scaffolds based on biodegradable metals (magnesium-based alloys) the doctoral candidate will 1) develop a biodegradable Mg-based polymeric composite, 2) develop OC Mg alloyscaffold coated with ceramic materials embedded into a polymeric matrix, 3) test the physical-chemical properties and 4) test the biological behaviour.
The doctoral candidate will be enrolled in the PhD program “Materials Engineering” (National University of Science and Technology “POLITEHNICA” Bucharest) and the main supervisor will be Dr. Iulian ANTONIAC (orcid 0000-0003-0112-3494). Secondments to other partners of the consortium will be carried out during the project in different periods (total of 5 months).
Salary and allowances
Duration of the employment: 36 months since 01.10.2026 (expected date of the recruitment)
Living allowance: 2.835,07 € Gross per month (34.020,84 € / year).
The net salary will result from deducting all compulsory (employer/employee) national social security contributions as well as direct taxes
Benefits
Additional 710 € Mobility Allowance per month (8.540€ / year). This amount will be paid as part of the salary.
495 € Family Allowance per month (5.920€ / year) - Applicable only when the recruited doctoral candidate has family obligations according to the Marie Skłodowska-Curie rules, i.e., when the recruited doctoral candidate has persons linked to him/her by:
1. marriage, or
2. a relationship with equivalent status to a marriage recognised by the legislation of the country or region where this relationship was formalised;
or
3. dependent children who are actually being maintained by the doctoral candidate
The Family Allowance, if applicable. would be paid as part of the salary.

Elimination criteria:
Rule 1: The candidate must be a doctoral candidate, i.e. not already in possession of a doctoral degree at the date of the recruitment.
Rule 2: The Marie Sklodowska-Curie actions are based on the principle of physical mobility. Each doctoral candidate is required to undertake transnational mobility to be eligible for recruitment in a DN project. As such, the doctoral candidate must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the recruiting beneficiary for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before his/her recruitment date.
The doctoral candidate will make a declaration committing to carry out the individual project entitled: “Biodegradable Mg-based alloy for optimal osteochondral scaffolds”.
After completing the competition, the selected person must take the admission exam to the doctoral school under the following conditions:
• Only graduates with a master's degree or its equivalent are entitled to participate in the admission competition for doctoral studies, and the cumulative number of transferable credits acquired, for the bachelor's and master's degree cycles, must be at least 300. According to the provisions of the Higher Education Law no. 199/2023, as subsequently amended and supplemented, the bachelor's degree of graduates of long-term higher education from the period prior to the application of the three Bologna-type cycles is equivalent to the master's degree in the specialty. Consequently, holders of long-term higher education degrees have the right to enroll in doctoral studies without the obligation to complete the second cycle of master's degree.
• Registration for the admission competition for doctoral studies in a doctoral field is not conditioned by the field in which the bachelor's or master's degree was obtained. The total cumulative duration of the bachelor's and master's degree cycle must be at least 300 transferable credits (ECTS).
• In order to register for the admission competition for a doctoral degree, the credits (ECTS) or credit points allocated for bachelor's and master's degree studies obtained abroad are recognized at the IOSUD level, provided that the 300 transferable credits (ECTS) are accumulated.
• Citizens of the Member States of the European Union, of the States belonging to the European Economic Area and of the Swiss Confederation, as well as British citizens and their family members, as beneficiaries of the Agreement on the withdrawal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from the European Union and the European Atomic Energy Community 2019/C 384 I/01, may participate in admission to all cycles of university studies, under the same conditions provided by law for Romanian citizens, including with regard to tuition fees.
• Citizens who are not part of the European Union, the European Economic Area and the Swiss Confederation (non-EU citizens), graduates of master's degree studies or graduates with a bachelor's degree or equivalent of long-term university studies (5, 6 years) may also apply for admission to doctoral studies. The recognition of studies completed by them outside Romania will be carried out by the specialized Directorate within the Ministry of Education
• The doctoral program is conducted in Romanian or English.

Eligibility criteria
The project RENOVATE will check that the information of the selected candidate is complete and complies with the rules of the eligibility criteria. All the candidates must submit their information in English.

Selection process
The selection process of DCs complies with ethical principles, including the highest standards of research integrity as set out in the European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity and, all applicable international, EU and national law, including the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and its Supplementary Protocols.
Assessment
Assessment comprises a two-stage process: a) scientific merit assessed by the application files and b) online interview (only for the short-listed candidates selected in stage a)). In each stage, the following items will be addressed: (i) academic profile, (ii) personal motivation, (iii) relevant background, (iv) professional experience, (v) scientific knowledge, (vi) transversal skills, and (vii) soft skills and English proficiency.
The selected candidate must provide all required documentation (degrees, identification, etc.) duly legalized (according to the country of origin) before the contract is formalized. The corresponding visa will also be required if necessary. Joining the MSCA Doctoral Network project (RENOVATE), as doctoral candidate, will be subject to the presentation and validation of these documents.
