Overview

The Mechanical Engineering PhD programme at University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) integrates foundational core graduate engineering requirements, advanced mathematics, comprehensive qualifying examinations, candidacy proposal defenses, and original dissertation research. Doctoral candidates build direct mentorship relationships with faculty research advisors across five key thematic research thrusts: Solid Mechanics and Materials Science; Thermal/Fluids Sciences; Dynamic Systems, Control, Robotics, and Design; and Biomechanical Engineering. The curriculum culminates in a publicly defended dissertation that presents original, peer-reviewed empirical or computational contributions to mechanical engineering sciences.

Key Facts

Core research focus areas across the doctoral program include high-temperature thermal management, computational heat transfer, and complex fluid transport; dynamic control, adaptive robotics, and structural vibration analysis; multi-scale materials characterization, fracture mechanics, and structural elasticity modeling; and cellular biomechanics, medical device mechanics, and biomaterial interaction analysis.
