Medical Video Classification
These projects are open to students worldwide, but have no funding attached. Therefore, the successful applicant will be expected to fund tuition fees at the relevant level (home or international) and any applicable additional research costs. Please consider this before applying.
The aim of this project is to develop and investigate machine learning methodologies for medical video classification. In many medical problems, clinicians may need to record videos for disease recognition and potentially for treatments. For example, when treating Parkinson’s disease (PD), clinicians may evaluate motor symptoms like hand tremor in order to identify PD, and classify the stage of PD. Early detection of PD would be important as interventions may be helpful. It is also well-known that PD can be identified by looking at the pattern when patients are drinking a cup of water.
In this project, we aim to develop machine learning (or artificial intelligence (AI)) approaches to aid clinicians in identifying and classifying such diseases, particularly Parkinson’s disease. We will have videos which record motor videos (i.e., patients drinking a cup of water and/or hand tremor videos) of a number of patients. We aim to classify these videos to identify the disease and the stage. We will evaluate a number of foundation models for the purpose of video classification. Based on that, we aim to fine-tune those models for our purpose. We will also develop lightweight models for video classification so that they can be deployed on mobile devices. Our ultimate target is to make our product scalable, so it can be widely applied in medical practice.
