Location
This position is located at the Smith County Jail.
This position is in a jail/correctional facility that is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Rotating shifts, including holidays, may be required.

Job Summary
The Medication Aide is responsible for rendering care in terms of individualized client needs, with established standards, under the direction/delegation of the provider and/or licensed nurse. The primary responsibility of the position is to administer medications and provide appropriate documentation.
Major Responsibilities/Duties/Critical Tasks
- Perform tasks associated with medication administration, including adherence to the rights of medication administration, monitoring patient vital signs, calculating medication dosages and stocking the medication cart.
- Administers and accurately records the administration of medications as prescribed by the physician in accordance with established policies and procedures and applicable state/federal regulations.
- Observe patients for drug reactions and report any problems to the nurses.
- Performs and reports Point of Care Testing.
- Collects and documents the patient's current health status and medical history.
- Completes and/or reviews Admission Data Record as defined by policy.
- Completes accurate and ongoing screening of patient's status and responds appropriately.
- Monitors medications to ensure adequate accountability measures are taken when medications are ordered, received into the facility, policies and procedures and applicable state/federal regulations.
- Assists the nurse in providing care to patients, which includes observation and reporting of patient needs.
- Recognizes and performs tasks according to level of education and training.
- Accepts responsibility and accountability for own performance according to state laws and regulations.
- Perform tasks in an ethical, legal and caring manner.
- Perform tasks safely and effectively to assure patient comfort and welfare.
- Obtains, records, and reports vital signs to appropriate nursing staff.
- Works collaboratively with other members of the health care team in coordination of the patient's care utilizing established procedures, policies, and standards.
- Adheres to required infection control, isolation procedures, and aseptic techniques in the delivery of patient care.
- Assists other team members in the performance of their assignments as directed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Education/Experience
- High school graduation or equivalent.
- Medical office experience.
- Previous experience as a Medication Aide or administration of medications required.
Required Licenses/Certifications
- Medication Aide certification.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain current BLS certification.
Accompanying Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
- Ability to operate standard office equipment and medical equipment such as Glucometer, I.V. pumps, portable oxygen, fluids, etc.
- Must be able to recognize and respond appropriately to urgent/emergent situations per protocols.
Clinical Position Requirements
Clinical positions may be required to complete a pre-employment health screening, following a contingent job offer, to determine whether they possess the physical capabilities needed to safely fulfill the specific demands of the position. Additionally, clinical positions require compliance with the University's Vaccine Preventable Disease Policy.
