Job Description

The MEDscienceLAB Teacher & Program Coordinator role is a position for an individual who is eager to teach in our MEDscienceLAB programs, manage the laboratory space, and help strategically grow this arm of the MEDscience Program. This position reports to the Assistant Director of MEDscienceLAB & Forensics and serves on a growing team that is dedicated to the organization's laboratory and forensics science programs. In this role, the lead teacher will co-teach classes in our simulation lab and wet lab spaces. They will also be responsible for preparing all labs, coordinating lab classes and managing equipment needs. They will also be responsible for program coordination for all HMS MEDscienceLAB and MEDscienceLAB Forensics classes. This individual must be a team player excels in a fast-paced, dynamic, and highly interactive environment and who is looking for a challenging opportunity to learn and grow with support.

This role will play an important part in a new pilot program, which focuses on preparing 18-25 year-old trainees for entry-level roles in life sciences laboratories. This role will support the Assistant Director of MEDscienceLAB & Forensics in developing and implementing an expanded version of the MEDscienceLAB curriculum that is tailored towards preparing older students for entry-level roles.

The teacher must be confident and comfortable in a wet lab space teaching students about the basics of laboratory research and current laboratory techniques such as gel electrophoresis, DNA extraction, PCR, and ELISA. In addition, the teacher will be responsible for ordering reagents and materials, preparing experimental protocols, and setting up the equipment for each session. Our medical simulations require teachers to take on the roles of instructor, attending physician, patient, and/or counselor to students as they diagnose patients (training provided). The teacher must be able to create a welcoming space for students with varying educational needs and should be passionate about making the life sciences accessible to all.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • 1+ years of laboratory experience.
  • 1+ years' experience teaching science.
  • Strong foundation of knowledge in biology and genetics.
  • Have experience in following lab techniques: ELISA, PCR, gel electrophoresis, preparing dilutions.
  • Excellent project management skills with proven attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple demands.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and a strong team player who enjoys working as part of a “lean team” - pitching in wherever needed.
  • Excellent written communication and oral presentation skills.
  • Social media/marketing experience is a plus.
  • Experience working in workforce development programs is a plus.

Additional Information

  • Standard Hours/Schedule: 35 hours per week.
