Staff within the School of Applied Sciences at Edinburgh Napier University have a track record of conducting applied research within football at all levels. Previous and existing partners include the Scottish FA, Hibernian FC, Greenock Morton FC, and Arsenal FC, amongst others. Our department is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, housed within our bespoke sport and exercise laboratories (inc. Biomechanics facility, Physiology Lab (with a climate and altitude chamber) and a Human performance Lab). In addition to our dedicated lab spaces, we also have the equipment and capacity to undertake performance analysis and conduct field-based testing within football training and competition.
As a research degree student, you will become a member of Edinburgh Napier University’s Graduate College and will be based in the School of Applied Science. You will be supported throughout your studies with training and events hosted locally in the school and by our Research, Innovation and Enterprise events team. Bespoke training will help you develop both your research and transferable skills. You will join a vibrant and growing community of postgraduate research students within the university, including access to our workspace and social space in our recently refurbished researcher community suite.
We are interested in hearing from applicants whose research or interests aligns any of the following areas of football science: physical development and performance, talent identification and development, female football, injury prevention and return to play, and multidisciplinary practice. We are also interested in hearing from applicants who may have an established project proposal or idea that may be outwith those listed above.

Academic qualifications
A first degree (at least a 2.2) ideally in a discipline related to sport, exercise or health with a good fundamental knowledge of the research process.
English language requirement
IELTS score must be at least 6.5 (with not less than 6.0 in each of the four components). Other, equivalent qualifications will be accepted. Full details of the University’s policy are available online.
