About the Department of Music
The music curriculum is designed to deepen students' understanding of musical form and expression through the development of skill in composition and performance joined with analysis of musical works and their place in various cultures. We seek to develop their awareness of aesthetics and of their place in the history of musical performance, craft, and scholarship. Music Department faculty members are committed to the education of the whole musician. This entails the study of performance, theory, culture, and history, as we believe these disciplines support each other in a comprehensive understanding of music. The department maintains an active public performance schedule that intersects with students, faculty, staff, and alums. Through these activities, the department also regularly engages with the wider Philadelphia arts community.
About the Position
The Music Performance Production Manager coordinates all aspects of performance activities and serves as the primary logistical and technical leader for all event productions for the Haverford College Department of Music.
Primary Responsibilities
- Serve as liaison with artists sponsored by Department of Music (15%)
- Negotiate and book for Performing Artists Series
- Manage the Department of Music's performance and facilities budget
- Prepare and disseminate promotional materials
- Handle publicity for events sponsored by the Department of Music (15%)
- Prepare posters, social media, press releases, advertisements, and web resources
- Handle production aspects of concerts involving Department of Music ensembles (15%)
- Set up the stage
- Prepare program
- Hire and supervise student workers (15%)
- Hire, train, and supervise student employees to provide concert event support (stage crew, box office, ushers, social media, poster distribution) and to archive concert recordings
- Launch and maintain presence at events (10%)
- Be present from before curtain time until the facility is closed after the event to attend to the needs of performers and the audience, and to provide staff presence in case of emergency situations
- Work cooperatively with other campus departments (15%)
- Work closely with other campus departments to schedule and maintain shared spaces, and to produce seasonal events with off-campus organizations
- Oversee lighting and sound maintenance in Marshall Auditorium
- Coordinate use with other departments and offices
- Maintain backstage storage areas
- Schedule and oversee maintenance for Department of Music instruments (15%)
- Maintain a comprehensive tuning and service schedule
- Respond to requests for regular maintenance
Line of Report: The Music Performance Production Manager reports to the Department of Music chair. This position would be responsible for supervising student workers.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent professional experience
- Five years of experience in arts administration, arts management, or other related experience
Professional Competencies
- Familiarity with software for advertising, online ticketing, scheduling, program preparation, and budget management
- Effective communication skills
- Excellent planning skills
- Ability to work cooperatively with other campus departments, including Administrative Auxiliary Services, Facilities Management, and Student Life
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with musical studies in higher education
- Experience in arts management in an educational setting
- Familiarity with music production
- Desire to engage with and support student musicians through departmental programs
