Job Summary

The Network and Infrastructure Specialist is responsible for the installation, maintenance, monitoring, and troubleshooting of Spartanburg Methodist College’s wired and wireless network infrastructure. This position supports the reliable operation of campus technology systems, including network equipment, telephony, physical cabling, surveillance, and controlled access. Working in a small, collaborative IT environment, the Specialist is expected to develop technical expertise quickly, take ownership of assigned systems, and deliver responsive service to students, faculty, and staff.

Essential Functions

  • Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot wired and wireless LAN/WAN infrastructure, including switches, routers, firewalls, and wireless access points
  • Monitor network performance and availability using network management tools; respond to alerts and outages promptly
  • Manage and maintain the campus VoIP telephone system, including user provisioning, equipment maintenance, and vendor coordination
  • Maintain physical cabling infrastructure (CAT6, fiber); coordinate with vendors for new cabling installations and projects
  • Administer and maintain the campus surveillance camera and video management system
  • Maintain and support controlled access (door card reader) systems
  • Maintain accurate records of network topology, IP address management (IPAM), and equipment inventory
  • Apply network security best practices including firewall rule management, network segmentation, and access control
  • Provide escalation support to IT Support Specialists for complex network-related issues
  • Stay current in networking technologies through self-study, vendor resources, and professional development
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Vice President for Information Technology & Analytics

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of LAN/WAN networking concepts, including TCP/IP, VLANs, switching, and routing fundamentals
  • Familiarity with enterprise-class network equipment (Cisco, Fortinet, Aruba, or similar)
  • Basic understanding of network security principles including firewalls, VPNs, and access control lists
  • Ability to read and interpret network diagrams and cabling documentation
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical users
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize appropriately
  • Commitment to responsive customer service in a higher education environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certifications such as CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Security+ or equivalent
  • Familiarity with firewall platforms (Fortinet, Palo Alto, or similar
  • Experience with cloud-managed networking (Extreme Networks, Aruba Central, or similar
  • Exposure to physical security systems (surveillance, access control)

Working Conditions

Work is performed in both office and campus environments. This position requires regular movement across campus, including work in wiring closets, telecommunications rooms, and occasionally outdoor areas. After-hours availability is required on occasion for network maintenance windows and emergency response.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to bend, stoop, crouch, reach, stand, climb ladders, and move across campus
  • Occasionally lift and carry equipment up to 50 pounds
  • Manual dexterity to install, terminate, and repair network components and cabling
  • Sufficient near vision to read information on computer displays and printed materials
  • Adequate hearing and verbal abilities to communicate effectively in person and by telephone

Education and Experience

Associate’s degree in information technology, Computer Networking, or a related field required; bachelor’s degree preferred. Relevant vendor or industry certifications and demonstrated echnical experience may be considered in lieu of degree requirements. 0–2 years of experience in a networking, IT infrastructure, or related technical role. Entry-level candidates with strong academic preparation and relevant certifications are encouraged to apply.
