The Ngunnawal Centre is our University of Canberra Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student success and support centre. Our friendly staff are committed to better university access, participation, and opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Operating under general direction and reporting to the Ngunnawal Centre Manager, Ngunnawal Centre Study Coaches will use specialist knowledge in their discipline area to provide knowledge and culturally safe academic support and skills development for Indigenous students. Ngunnawal Centre Study Coaches have a critical role in supporting students to successfully continue in their course, with a goal of achieving improved learning outcomes, successful course progression and ultimately course completion.

Some of the responsibilities of a Ngunnawal Centre Study Coach are to engage 1:1 with Indigenous students to develop tutoring plans, use learning, and support tools available to students within the university to increase their learning capacity and engagement with their studies. As a Ngunnawal Centre Study Coach you will be committed to empowering our students academically, professionally, and personally.

To be considered for upcoming positions you will require a WWVP, demonstrated discipline expertise and an understanding of how relevant subjects are taught at UC. As this is a position in support of our Aboriginal and/ Torres Strait Islander students, it is important to have an awareness and respect of cultural sensitivities to ensure the best support for the student’s success.

Study Coaches will be required to meet the following criteria:

  • Must be UC Honours, Postgraduate, or HDR students
  • Must attend mandatory paid training delivered by Study Skills. This training covers coaching strategies to support academic integrity and promote an empowering, student‑led learning approach.
  • Must complete:
  • A student–coach work plan at the start of each semester, and
  • End‑of‑semester reporting for each student they support.
