Position Summary
The Nurse in Health Services is a professional role that requires the ability to work in collaboration with a dynamic team as well as to work independently. The Nurse provides routine, urgent, and emergent nursing care to adolescent/young adults and employees both in the clinic and responding to emergencies on campus. The nurse should possess strong critical thinking, time management, and organizational skills. This a CWA Union position and is benefit eligible.
Responsibilities
- Administer care according to established nursing protocols and standards of care.
- Nursing triage care and treatment of routine and urgent health care problems including patient appointments, walk-ins, phlebotomy, EKG tracing and immunizations.
- Administer medications as ordered including oral, injectable, nebulizer treatments, and intravenous fluids. Post treatment monitoring for adverse reactions and efficacy.
- Support employees exposed to or diagnosed with an infectious illness and provide clearance when appropriate. Assist with the process of contact tracing infectious diseases.
- Assist injured employees by triaging, providing first aid care, and initiating an incident report.
- Provide travel health counseling for students and employees.
- Collaborate with off campus Allergists to obtain orders and administer allergy injections.
- Evaluate and treat individuals on campus when emergencies arise. It requires preparation and the ability to quickly change priorities from routine tasks to emergency assessment and response.
- Maintain quality control testing of all diagnostics testing equipment including Autoclave sterilization log and quality.
- Maintain necessary equipment, inventory and supplies including crash cart safety checks.
- Collect and process laboratory specimens from patients.
- Manage medical records and documents in the electronic health record.
- Represent Health Services and Vassar College at campus events.
- Cross train to fill in for the front office Administrative Assistant and Certified Medical Assistant for lunch breaks and sick calls.
- Follow all regulations regarding OSHA and hazardous waste and perform respirator fit testing.
Required knowledge, skills and abilities
- Two- or four-year nursing degree and valid RN license.
- A minimum of one year of acute care nursing experience.
- CPR certification.
- Well-developed physical assessment skills.
- Ability to work independently.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Preferred knowledge, skills and abilities
- Experience in college health, public health, urgent care or emergency medicine.
- Allergy desensitization injection experience.
- Phlebotomy and IV Skills.
