Scope of Job:
To oversee and provide high-quality, hands-on learning experiences for nursing students in simulation environments to ensure the development of foundational skills and confidence needed for patient care. To facilitate student learning in nursing theory and clinical procedures, operating lab equipment, designing effective simulation experiences, and contributing to student development through training/instruction, assessment, and mentorship to prepare compassionate, skilled, and practice-ready nurses through immersive, scenario-based education that bridges the gap between classroom learning and clinical practice.
Description of Duties:
- Plans, prepares and facilitates student learning in the Health Assessment, Professional Nursing Practice Skills Labs and Open labs to lead scenario-based simulation and debriefing sessions.
- Collaborates with educational course faculty and other members of the UTRGV SON faculty and staff to facilitate student learning in the Health Assessment, Nursing Practice Skills, and Simulation Labs while promoting the integration of simulation and other instructional technology, ensuring that students can successfully meet the stated objectives.
- Provides simulation expertise, direction, and guidance to assist the UTRGV School of Nursing program faculty, staff and students in performing simulation exercises and scenarios based on course objectives and student learning outcomes.
- Develops and executes simulation-based education to enhance hands-on learning and prepare students for real-world clinical scenarios.
- Leads and trains in role-playing applications, props placement and moulage set-up before and after simulations in addition to recording of information and debriefing of simulations.
- Evaluates student performance and level of competency and provides educational remediation as needed.
- Communicates student performance issues or concerns to didactic and clinical course faculty.
- Responsible for facilitating, setting-up and maintaining the lab spaces, nursing skills and simulation labs in order to keep the necessary equipment and supplies for student learning activities.
- Provides technical assistance, support and training to faculty instructors and staff in the use of simulation equipment.
- Stays current with the latest evidence-based practices and industry advances and makes recommendations for advanced technology/equipment in order to provide high quality simulations services that enhance student learning and impact patient safety and quality of patient care.
- Maintains records of all skills-based simulation activities including number of students participants and student performance.
- Provides student participation and performance reports as needed.
- Participates in quality improvement initiatives or scholarly projects, as appropriate, related to lab instruction and/or other simulation activities.
- Serves as liaison for other simulation activities with other UTRGV colleges and outside entities (i.e., clinical partners, community partners, Interprofessional Education (IPE), etc).
- Develops and maintains positive working relationships with all users of the UTRGV SON Simulation Labs, including other University departments and outside agencies.
- Develops and maintain positive relationships with alumni, donors, and community partners.
- Complies with all governmental and University policies, rules and regulations.
- Stays current and adheres to university policies and procedures to ensure consistent and compliant academic and operational environment.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervision Received:
General supervision from assigned supervisor.
Supervision Given:
Direct supervision of assigned staff.
Required Education:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) from and accredited university/school.
Preferred Education:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited university.
Licenses/Certifications:
Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure by the Texas Board of Nursing.
Required Experience:
Three (3) years of clinical practice experience as a Registered Nurse (RN).
Preferred Experience:
Registered nurse with strong clinical practice and or academia experience. Tech-savvy with the ability to adapt to evolving technologies particularly in nursing education. Strong simulation experience is desired
Equipment:
Use of standard office, lab, and clinical equipment including simulation, and audio/visual equipment
Working Conditions:
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office/Lab/Simulation environment; some travel, weekend/evening work is required. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
