Position Overview

The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a full-time Tenure or Clinical Track faculty position in Small Animal Neurology and Neurosurgery. Applicants must have a demonstrated commitment to excellence in clinical service and teaching. Applicants must have a DVM or equivalent degree. Individuals who are ACVIM-Neurology Diplomates, ECVN Diplomates or are ACVIM-Neurology board eligible, are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will join a distinguished small animal Neurology program that includes three ACVIM-Neurology diplomates and four neurology residents, in addition to a robust small animal clinical faculty (https://vet.osu.edu/clinical-sciences/clinical-specialties/small-animal-services). The Veterinary Medical Center has state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, including diagnostic imaging (128-slice CT, 3.0-Tesla MRI), an independent rehabilitation service and surgical capabilities at 2 locations: VMC-Columbus and VMC-Dublin. All clinical facilities, including the surgical suites were completely renovated in 2017.

Clinical responsibilities include general neurology and neurosurgery. Teaching responsibilities will include lectures, labs, and clinical teaching of small animal neurology to professional students, interns, residents, and graduate students. Clinical-track candidates will be assigned up to 65% time in clinics, including clinical teaching of students and advanced training of interns and residents. Tenure track candidates will be assigned up to a 50% clinical service commitment. Sponsored research and associated publication are required for tenure track but not required for clinical track faculty, yet clinical research, publications or other scholarly activities to advance clinical veterinary medicine are expected and encouraged. Every faculty member is expected to participate in professional outreach, committee service, and curriculum development. There is a mentoring program for new faculty members to support their academic development as teachers and investigators. There are extensive opportunities for faculty to develop collaborative research endeavors with clinicians and scientists within the College and across the University. The College supports an active Clinical Trials Office (https://vet.osu.edu/vmc/cto) to assist faculty with clinical research. Excellent collaborative opportunities are available in the Departments of Veterinary Biosciences and Veterinary Preventive Medicine within the College as well as other units across the University campus, including the comprehensive OSU Wexner Medical Center, which is within walking distance of the College. The College of Medicine (http://medicine.osu.edu) and the College of Pharmacy (http://www.pharmacy.ohio-state.edu) are a just a few of the resources available to clinicians interested in comparative research.

Performance Objectives

TEACHING DUTIES

Clinical, didactic, and laboratory teaching of professional students, residents and interns in the Small Animal Neurology and Neurosurgery Service, in conjunction with the diagnosis and treatment of patients presented to the OSU Veterinary Medical Center.

CLINICAL SERVICE AND OUTREACH DUTIES

All aspects of patient care associated with a busy Small Animal Neurology and Neurosurgery practice including: patient management, client care, communication with referring DVMs, consulting with colleagues, medical record keeping on your cases, professional development, and participation in public relations activities.

RESEARCH AND SCHOLARLY DUTIES

Use of scheduled off-clinic time for preparing teaching materials, conducting clinical research, writing for publication, and other scholarly activities. Tenure track faculty are expected to meet the criteria established in the colleges Research Metrics document for their level of research appointment. Although extramurally funded research is not required for clinical track faculty, participation in collaborative research projects, resident and graduate student projects is strongly encouraged.

Education and Experience Requirements

Required: D.V.M. or equivalent combination of education and experience; individuals who are ACVIM-Neurology Diplomates, ECVN Diplomates or are ACVIM-Neurology board eligible, are encouraged to apply. Desired: The candidate should have excellent communication skills and an ability to work cooperatively with students, faculty, and staff.
