Position Summary

The Department of Pathology at the University of Illinois at Chicago is seeking a full-time academic surgical pathologist to join our faculty serving as an expert consultant. Additional experience or interest in cytopathology is desirable. Rank and tenure will be commensurate with candidate's experience, qualifications and funding.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Service Responsibilities
  • Provide expert diagnostic interpretation of cytopathology specimens, including gynecologic (Pap tests), non-gynecologic (FNA, fluids), and rapid on-site evaluations (ROSE) for adequacy assessments.
  • Offer consultative services to clinicians and referring pathologists for complex cytologic cases, including molecular and ancillary testing integration.
  •  Perform and supervise fine-needle aspiration (FNA) procedures in collaboration with radiologists, surgeons, and other clinicians.
  •  Participate in the Anatomic Pathology on-call rotation, providing timely diagnostic support for urgent cytology cases.
  • Fulfill other duties as assigned by the Director of Anatomic Pathology or Department Head to ensure efficient laboratory operations.
  • Education & Teaching Responsibilities
  • Train medical students, residents, fellows, and cytotechnology students in cytopathology diagnosis, FNA techniques, and reporting standards (e.g., Bethesda System for gynecologic cytology).
  • Develop and lead didactic sessions, tumor boards, and multidisciplinary conferences focused on cytologic correlation with histopathology.
  • Mentor trainees in research projects, abstract presentations, and publications related to cytopathology.
  • Participate in the evaluation and curriculum development for cytotechnology programs (if applicable).
  • Assist in recruiting and evaluating pathology trainees, with an emphasis on cytopathology competenc
  • Research & Clinical Investigation Responsibilities
  • Conduct research in cytopathology, including studies on diagnostic markers, liquid biopsy applications, or AI-assisted cytology screening.
  • Collaborate with clinicians, basic scientists, and industry partners to advance translational cytopathology research.
  • Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at national/international conferences (e.g., USCAP, ASC).
  • Secure external funding (e.g., NIH, industry grants) to support research initiatives.
  • Other Professional Responsibilities
  • Serve on departmental/hospital committees (e.g., Cancer Committee, CAP accreditation teams) to uphold quality and compliance standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP).
  • Maintain certification and expertise through CME (e.g., CAP guidelines, ASC meetings) and board-certification requirements.
  • Engage with professional societies (e.g., American Society of Cytopathology, CAP) to contribute to guidelines and best practices.
  • Support outreach initiatives, such as community screening programs or inter-institutional collaborations.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates for this position must have an MD, DO, DO/PhD, MD/PhD degree, or other equivalent degree; qualify for a license to practice medicine in Illinois, and possess board certification in AP or AP/CP. Subspecialty board certification in cytopathology and/or eligibility for cytopathology board certification is desirable.For fullest consideration, please submit a curriculum vitae and names of three
