Open Rank

The Department of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine invites applications for an open-rank, tenure-track faculty member to join the Childhood Anxiety and Mood Disorders Program (CHAAMP; https://www.med.unc.edu/psych/research/foundation-of-hope/chaamp/). This recruitment reflects the continued growth of CHAAMP and is supported by a longstanding partnership with the Foundation of Hope (https://walkforhope.com/chaamp/), whose investment has been instrumental in advancing youth mental health research at UNC and beyond.

CHAAMP is a multidisciplinary clinical research program dedicated to the prevention, assessment, and treatment of anxiety and mood disorders across childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood. CHAAMP scientists use a multidisciplinary approach to research with studies ranging from basic science functional neuroimaging studies to randomized controlled trial treatment studies. CHAAMP brings together clinical scientists and community partners to advance our understanding of mood and anxiety disorders and develop evidence-based interventions with real-world impact. CHAAMP is distinguished by its strong emphasis on team science, sustained success in securing external funding (e.g., NIH, PCORI, philanthropic sources), and deep partnerships across clinical, academic, and community settings throughout North Carolina.

This faculty member will lead and conduct cutting-edge clinical research focused on anxiety and mood disorders in youth, with particular emphasis on the early and school-age years. Strong areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • The comorbidity of substance use with anxiety and mood disorders.
  • Community-based participatory research (CBPR) approaches.
  • Research addressing mental health needs in rural and historically underserved communities.
  • Development, testing, implementation, and scaling of evidence-based prevention and intervention programs.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to build and sustain a robust, externally funded research program aligned with CHAAMP's mission to translate science into practice, reduce mental health disparities, and improve access to high-quality care for children and families. Through the support of the Foundation of Hope and UNC's collaborative research environment, this position offers exceptional opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration, innovation, and community impact. In particular, CHAAMP faculty have a strong commitment to collaborative research that take advantage of our faculty members' wide range of expertise, such as developmental cognitive neuroscience, digital technologies, mobile device data collection, prevention research, and others.

In addition to research leadership, the faculty member will play a central role in mentoring postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and research staff, contributing to CHAAMP's strong culture of training, mentorship, and professional development. CHAAMP is deeply committed to fostering an inclusive, collegial, and supportive environment that values diverse perspectives and innovative approaches to child mental health research.

A demonstrated record of or strong potential for developing and maintaining an externally funded research program is expected. Appointment rank will be commensurate with experience and accomplishments.
