The Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine at the University of Houston is recruiting for a non-tenure track Open Rank Clinical Faculty - Assistant Dean for Student Affairs. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and Professional Development plays a pivotal role in supporting the holistic development and success of medical students, promoting student welfare, professional identity, and career preparation. Combining physician perspective and role modeling, expertise in physician career pathways, career selection and entry into graduate medical education, the Assistant Dean is key leader in the mentorship, counseling, and oversight of career advising programs to ensure medical students are equipped with the resources and guidance needed to make informed decisions about their medical careers, beginning from matriculation and continuing through graduation. The Assistant Dean collaborates with the associate dean in the leadership of the office, compliance with accreditation, university, and other regulatory standards, and direct student support.

Primary Responsibilities

0.50 FTE – Administrative – Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and Professional Development

  • Counsel, advise, and provide academic support to medical students
  • Monitor student progress and progression
  • Train and mentor learning community leadership to promote academic and personal growth
  • Ensure compliance with standards, preparation of accreditation related documents, participation in survey visits, and working to address areas of improve identified during quality improvement and accreditation reviews
  • In collaboration with the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, oversee ongoing development, implementation, and enhancement the career advising program from matriculation to graduation.
  • In collaboration with the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and the Associate Dean for Assessment and Quality Improvement, develop and maintain an evaluation process to determine the effectiveness of career advising (e.g., collect and analyze data on career outcomes, residency placement, and student satisfaction), identify necessary interventions, and engage in continuous quality improvement to achieve and maintain accreditation standards.
  • Oversee the development of a clinical faculty advising program including clinical faculty advisor recruitment, development and evaluation of effectiveness.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with alumni, healthcare organizations, and industry professionals to facilitate networking opportunities for students.
  • As part of the Student Affairs team, provide career and residency advising for students throughout their medical school career, including one-on-one, group, and other educational activities from orientation through transition to residency.
  • Assist students in creating personalized career development plans and timelines including:
    • Ongoing development workshops, seminars, and educational materials to enhance students’ understanding of career options and develop their professional skills.
    • Provide oversight of the residency application process and program selection.
    • In conjunction with specialty advisors, advise students on elective selection in the Advanced Clerkship and Electives phase, specialty competitiveness, individual specialty requirements, and requirements of programs outside of the NRMP.
    • Oversee the NRMP Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP) during Match week.
  • Participate in regional and national careers in medicine organizations and conferences

0.50 FTE – Additional duties in the Department of Clinical Sciences

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Medical Licensure in the State of Texas
  • Medical degree from an accredited allopathic or osteopathic college of medicine
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience working with medical students as course director, clerkship director, or faculty career advisor

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with holistic student support practices
  • Experience in residency program leadership and resident selection
  • Knowledge of the AAMC Careers in Medicine and other career advising best practices
  • Experience with LCME accreditation and continuous quality improvement
